Built at the behest of US-based Porsche importer, Max Hoffman, the 356 Speedster was designed as a low-cost, stripped-out track day variant of the standard 356. In comparison to the regular Cabriolet, Speedsters had a far simpler interior, a shorter windshield that was easily removable, a far lighter and simpler folding top, and removable side curtain windows. While produced in only limited quantities (some sources quote merely 3,944 were built between 1955 and 1959), the distinctive silhouette of the Speedster was immortalized in Porsche - and automotive - history.
