Completed on July 1, 1957
This 356A Coupe has been beautifully restored and is equipped with a 2.5-liter Polo 4-cylinder engine, 911 rear trailing-arm suspension, a manual 911 5-speed transmission (Type 902/01), and a four-wheel disc braking system. Finished in its original exterior color, Aquamarine Blue. A bare-metal restoration was completed; the paintwork is in exceptional condition, with excellent gaps and panel fit. The upholstery is pristine, with light grey leather, grey German square-weave carpets, and a Nardi wooden steering wheel. The dashboard accommodates a collection of special VDO gauges, including a Carrera speedometer, a Carrera tachometer, and a 904-combination gauge with fuel level, oil temperature, and oil pressure.
Between 2005 and 2006, this 356A Coupe underwent a comprehensive restoration by several respected Porsche specialists in Southern California. Metal fabrication was performed by Andy Elsener of Huntington Beach, California, with additional work carried out by GT Werk, D & C Cars of Costa Mesa, California, West Coast Haus in the San Francisco Bay Area, and McKenzies Performance Products in Anaheim, California. The body received significant modifications, including widened rear quarter panels and a custom louvered rear decklid fabricated by Andy Elsener. East Autobody performed all paint and bodywork in Orange, California, and the 356 was fitted with GT-style bumpers, Marchal driving lights, and pop-out Lexan rear-quarter windows. The interior includes Speedster bucket seats, a removable roll bar, power windows, a CD AM/FM stereo, a fire suppression system, a Carrera speedometer, and a Carrera 8,000-rpm tachometer with an auxiliary 904 gauge. Additional equipment includes power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, Marchal driving lights, and pop-out Lexan rear side windows. Following completion of the build, the 356 was driven approximately 40,000 miles throughout California over 13 years, during which time it received multiple awards at the 2017 Werks Reunion in Monterey, California.
In 2022, this 356 was further enhanced with the installation of a 2.5-liter flat-four Polopolus performance engine by ADV Performance of Temecula, California. The Polo engine features a custom 911-style engine case, dual Weber carburetors, Bosch CDI ignition, front-mounted oil coolers, and a dual-center-exit exhaust system. Additional setup work and servicing was completed in 2024 by George Riggins Sport Cars in Harmony, Pennsylvania, including an inspection, adjustments, headlight work, and ceramic coating. The current owners maintenance team includes Ray Segale, an Italian Porsche and Ferrari engine expert, and Mike Walchli, a well-known Swiss general mechanic for 356 and early 911s, both in Sun Valley, Idaho. Recent service included new spark plugs, a new distributor, engine fine-tuning, and general maintenance.
Extensive mechanical upgrades were incorporated into this build. The power is delivered through a 902/01 manual 5-speed transmission with custom gearing and a ZF limited-slip differential. The transmission tunnel was modified to accommodate the gearbox. Braking performance was enhanced with Alcon four-piston front calipers and vented rotors. At the same time, suspension upgrades include 1967 911S rear trailing arms, Koni shocks, a 19 mm front sway bar, 26 mm rear torsion bars, de-cambered front spindles, gusseted trailing arms, and dual front-mounted oil coolers. The 356 rides on 15 x 7 Boyd Coddington custom wheels fitted with 205 55 15 Yokohama Advan Fleva tires (dated 2022).
Accompanying documentation includes all receipts for the restoration, development, the 2.5-liter Polo engine build, and trophies. This is a well-executed 356A Outlaw build that offers a compelling blend of classic 356 aesthetics and significantly enhanced performance. A rare opportunity to procure a very tastefully upgraded 356A Outlaw Coupe incorporating top-tier enhancements for exceptional performance.
