1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

By the mid-1950s, the Mercedes-Benz range showcased remarkable breadth, from practical four-cylinder saloons to the exotic 300 SLone of the most coveted sports cars of its era. Yet it was Max Hoffman, the influential North American importer, who recognized the need for a more attainable model to satisfy the booming U.S. market. At his urging, Mercedes-Benz created the 190 SL, a stylish, refined, and thoroughly modern roadster that complemented the flagship 300 SL while appealing to a wider audience.

Unveiled at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the 190 SL shared visual kinship with the Gullwing but adopted a softer, more approachable character. Built on a shortened W121 Ponton platform, it employed independent suspension with double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear, offering ride and handling far superior to many of its British and Italian contemporaries. Only available as a convertible, the 190 SL featured roll-up windows, a high-quality folding soft top, and an optional removable hardtop, delivering comfort and refinement rarely found in open sports cars of the period.

Under the hood, the 190 SL carried a 1.9-liter SOHC four-cylinder engine derived from the 300 series six, paired with twin Solex carburetors to produce 120 horsepower. A fully synchronized four-speed manual gearbox ensured smooth operation. While not conceived as a competition car, the 190 SL was an unqualified commercial success, with nearly 26,000 examples built between 1955 and 1963. More importantly, it played a pivotal role in strengthening Mercedes-Benzs image in North America, paving the way for decades of success in the sports and luxury markets.

Offered here in one of Mercedes-Benzs most lovable colors, the Erdbeerrot Metallic, or more gracefully known as Strawberry Red (DB 543), is a 1957 example of the 190SL. Completed on June 9, 1956, it was delivered through Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles and equipped with several rare factory options, as documented by its original data card. These include a transverse rear seat, color-matched hardtop, Becker FM shortwave radio, and black cloth soft top with matching boot. Just 4,032 units were produced for 1956, placing this car among the rarer years of production.

In the early 1990s, noted Mercedes-Benz collector Tom Reiger commissioned a comprehensive restoration by renowned marque specialist Bob Platz. The result was a multiple award-winning example, honored with Best of Show at the International 190 SL Group meet, along with First, Senior, and Grand National recognition from the AACA.

In its present state the W121 presents as a sublime roadster wearing a carefully preserved restoration showing limited use. Even a trained eye would find it hard to believe this SLs restoration is nearly thirty years old. The interior condition can be found just the same; limited use, high quality preservation, and plenty of character. The car still retains its painted, factory hardtop, in addition to other exterior accessories such as a pair of Hella foglamps.

Today, this Strawberry Red 190 SL presents as an outstanding example of one of Mercedes-Benzs most beloved sports cars. With its rare options, documented history, and award-winning restoration, this car represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors of postwar European classics.
