1957 Cadillac Eldorado

Cadillacs 1957 models benefited from new X-frame construction for increased structural rigidity and a lower overall height, giving the cars a sleek look indeed. This was most apparent on top-of-the-line Eldorado models, the Seville hardtop coupe and Biarritz convertible, which gained a distinctive tail treatment with rounded flanks, each bearing a single, sharply bladed shark-like fin. Under the hood was Cadillacs 365-cubic-inch V-8, crowned with two four-barrel carburetors and capable of producing 325 horsepower, 20 more than the engine found in standard models.

The Eldorado Biarritz remained one of Americas costliest, most seductive and sought-after convertibles and, accordingly, was quite rare. Only 1,800 were built for the 1957 model year, accounting for a very small percentage of Cadillacs total production.

This particular Eldorado Biarritz was completed in February 1956, according to a copy of its build record on file, finished in black over light red leather, with a black convertible top, E-Z Eye tinted glass, and Autronic Eye automatic headlight dimmer just as it appears today. Both chassis and engine number stampings are present and match the build sheet, as does the body tag.

Originally delivered in New York state, the Cadillac was restored in later ownership, likely during the late 1990s, with factory-style air conditioning. It was acquired for the present collection in 2023 and has since enjoyed the excellent care typical of the conscientious and thoughtful owner. Among other improvements completed by the owners in-house team were the installation of new correct gold-tinted badging; rebuilding the starter, fuel pump, and Hydrovac brake booster; and replacing the wheel cylinders, radiator core, and whitewall tires. Parts invoices for the work are on file. Further, the cars air conditioning has been converted to a Vintage Air system for reliable use.

In beautiful condition today, this Cadillac would be wonderful for local shows, or simply for driving and enjoying as its owner intended in great comfort and truly flamboyant style, as one of the best Cadillac products from what was arguably the companys golden era.
