Classic Car Overview

Among the most elegant grand touring automobiles of the postwar era, the BMW 503 Cabriolet combined hand-built craftsmanship with advanced engineering and timeless design by Albrecht Graf von Goertz. This Series I example is one of just 13 U.S.-specification cars produced, and was delivered new through Hoffman Motorcars of New York before spending many years in California. Finished in elegant Papyrus over blue leather upholstery with gray piping, leather-bound carpets, and a matching blue convertible top, 47,832 miles are displayed at the time of cataloguing. This early BMW retains its distinctive chrome brightwork, painted 16 steel wheels, Becker Mexico AM/FM radio, and a hydraulically operated convertible roof and windows.
Power comes from a 3,168cc aluminum-block and aluminum-head overhead-valve V8 equipped with dual Zenith downdraft carburetors, paired with a 4-speed manual remote column-shift transmission. Finned vacuum-assisted drum brakes, refined road manners, and a beautifully appointed cabin exemplify BMWs low-volume luxury craftsmanship of the 1950s, well-suited for open-road touring. A repaint in its original color and a complete cabin retrim were completed between 2018 and 2023. Extensive mechanical refurbishment carried out between 2023 and 2024 further enhances the cars readiness, including rebuilt carburetors and clutch master cylinder, a flushed fuel tank, re-cored radiator, new water pump, electric fuel pump, recent compression testing, and the installation of Koni shock absorbers.
On the ground, Pirelli Corsa tires show approximately 500 miles of use, complete with a matching spare. Service records spanning from the 1960s to the present, a BMW Classic Certificate, factory literature, repair manual, spare parts catalogue, ignition key set, matching spare wheel and tire, and tool kit are included in the sale. Combining extraordinary rarity, documented provenance, and meticulous recent refurbishment, this 503 Cabriolet represents one of the most sought-after BMWs of the postwar era.
