From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Classic Car Overview

This 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk is finished in two-tone soft yellow and root-beer brown, and was reportedly restored prior to the current owner’s purchase at an auction in 2015. Work included a repaint, as well as fitting modern tachometer internals, an electric fuel pump, and a new fuel sending unit. Power is provided by a 352ci Packard V8, which is backed by a 3-speed manual with overdrive in this example. Around 400 miles have been added by the current owner, who is a collector. Servicing since 2015 included installing a new speedometer cable and rebuilding the carburetor, gauges, and Climatizer. Fuel system and coolant flushes were conducted this month in preparation for sale, and this Studebaker is now being offered on behalf of the current owner with a clean Washington state title.

The car was restored prior to the current owner’s acquisition in 2015, and work including a repainting of the undercarriage, as well as the body in two stages with a clearcoat.

The fender extensions were repainted to correct the finish, and the fit of the driver’s door is described to be slightly off. In addition to some wiring harness troubleshooting, electrical items replaced over the years included new light bulbs and switches.

The car features front and rear bench seats. Interior work under the current owner included replacing some dash pad trim material, replacing dash bulbs, and installing a new defroster switch. An itemized list of other work is shown in the gallery, and highlights include the following:

  • 2/2018 – Replace faulty speedo cable
  • 8/2016 – Rebuild tachometer and clock
  • 8/2016 – Repair Climatizer, defroster, and fan
  • 6/2015 – Replace heater flow control valve

The odometer shows approximately 400 miles, representing the distance covered since the restoration. The radio does not work.

Power comes from a 352ci V8 that is backed by a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive. In 2016, the carburetor and accelerator pump were rebuilt, in March 2018 an oil change and coolant flush were conducted. The overdrive cable was replaced and a new bracket was fabricated for the assembly.

The engine seeps some oil as can be seen in the undercarriage pictures. The driver-side muffler has some holes in the pictures provided but has since been replaced, while an exhaust riser was replaced in 2016.

A comprehensive list detailing items replaced during the current owner’s time with the car is included, as is a Studebaker magazine.
