The Ford Thunderbird was born from a desire to give Ford a stylish, personal sports car that could compete with the excitement generated by Chevrolets new Corvette. Rather than pursuing an all-out sports car focused solely on performance, Ford envisioned what it called a personal car, one that blended spirited V-8 power with comfort, luxury, and everyday practicality. The formula proved to be an immediate success, attracting buyers who wanted open-air motoring wrapped in elegant styling and modern conveniences. By 1956, Ford refined the Thunderbird with a host of improvements that made an already popular automobile even more desirable.

The 1956 Ford Thunderbird Convertible received a number of thoughtful updates, including the now-iconic externally-mounted Continental-style spare tire, which freed valuable luggage space in the trunk while giving the car a distinctive rear profile. Air vents were added behind the front wheels to improve interior ventilation, and the spare tire placement allowed the trunk lid to open farther for easier access. Power came from Fords dependable 312-cubic-inch Y-block V-8 engine, available in several configurations and paired with either a three-speed manual or Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. With its combination of handsome styling, strong performance, and refined road manners, the 1956 Thunderbird cemented its place as one of Americas most influential personal luxury cars and remains an enduring icon of 1950s automotive design.

Offered from the Gene Davenport Estate Collection, a lifelong car enthusiast and former trustee of the historic Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum; Mr. Davenport acquired this 1956 Ford Thunderbird 20 years ago in 2006 from a Mr. Johnson of Indiana who had owned it since 1997. Nicely restored inside and out, this example is finished in its original and charming color of Thunderbird Sage Green over a green and white vinyl interior. Complementing its stylish colors is a removable port hole hard top. Features are plentiful and include power brakes, a Town & Country radio, clock, tinted glass, fender skirts, and a rear-mounted continental kit. Power is supplied by a classic 312-cubic-inch V-8 engine thats paired with a Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, allowing everyone to experience this personal luxury automobile.

Blending timeless 1950s styling with V-8 performance, factory options, and long-term enthusiast ownership by Mr. Gene Davenport, this charming Sage Green Thunderbird is ready to be enjoyed on the road, admired at local shows, or welcomed into ones collection.
