Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

Classic Car Overview

Cars like this 1956 Chevy 210 Restomod require two things to be built right: time and money. The more of one you have, the less of the other you need, but theres no way around it, a car this nice requires a serious investment. Packing a beautifully detailed LS V8 and 4L60E automatic transmission under the hood, and a slick black paint job, this is a car that everyone can appreciate. Fast, reliable, and gorgeous, its everything the original designers wanted the 1956 Chevy to be. The black paint job looks very factory correct, although it uses modern materials to give it a sparkling update. Black-on-black is a combination that would have looked downright sinister on the streets of 1955, although there was no such thing as paint that looked this good back then. The bodywork is straight enough that the glossy paint shows beautifully, and the car fits together extremely well, the result of all that time and money. All the brightwork has been replaced - thats right, the bumpers, the trim, the mirrors, the grille, door handles, and badges -- so the shine can almost be seen from space. Detailing is crisp, and only a few very small imperfections can be found. Although its not perfect, in person this car is impossible to ignore. The interior has been restored to look period correct with a few notable exceptions. The seats wear black seat covers front and rear, and the door panels were stitched with red diamond-patterned inserts to provide a little contrast and flare. Fresh matching black carpets show expert binding work and the headliner overhead looks like it wouldve in 56. Youll note the dash is quite stock and totally dazzling, with the original gauges replaced by nice-looking Dakota Digital dials, and a custom billet steering wheel rests atop a polished tilt steering column. Sharp-eyed viewers will spot the modern A/C vents under the dash, which are effective without changing the character of the interior. There is a Retrosound AM/FM/AUX radio in the dash, and there was no cutting to install it properly. In back, the trunk was restored neatly to match the cabin, using the same materials and careful craftsmanship. Power comes from a well-dressed 5.3 liter LS V8 Vortec that came from a 2000 Silverado. Professionally installed with a small cam and upgraded valvetrain, it looks and acts like the factory put it there, but with a little extra pop. Modern amenities include factory fuel injection, so it starts and idles like your daily driver and actually pulls down decent fuel economy on the open road. Wiring and plumbing is neatly installed and with a big aluminum radiator up front, keeping things cool is no big deal. Underneath theres a slick-shifting 4L60E automatic transmission from the same Silverado, a nice upgrade over the original 2-speed PowerGlide. Shorty headers feed an aggressive-sounding dual exhaust system with cherry-bomb mufflers while the suspension boasts a power rack-and-pinion system and power front disc brakes. It rides on a set of Cragar SS wheels with 15-inch Cooper Cobra radials all around. Its rare to see cars this nice, and when one like this shows up at a cruise night or car show, its obvious where the big money was spent. From the superb paint and bodywork to the rumbling V8 under the hood, its a car that will delight you every time you see it in the garage or climb behind the wheel, which is what this hobby is all about.
