From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
It was a labor of love. A comprehensive restoration on this 1955 Ford Thunderbird convertible was completed in 2014. It was done by the owner, and he took his time. 21/2 years to be precise. So although there isnt one flat body panel on a 55 Tbird, the Raven Black paint glistens and it looks a foot deep. The original black hard top comes with the car and it also sports a black soft top. Starting with an already low-mileage rust-free original with approximately 46,500 actual miles on the clock, the car also presents beautifully on the inside, the undercarriage, and the engine compartment, as it has only been driven 1500 miles since it was finished. The engine room stands out for its neatness of course, the trick fuel injection, and a set of owner-built valve covers. These are powder-coated black, then using the original Thunderbird sticker, a digitized version was created and then CNC milled into the valve covers. The results are astonishing. But shes not all show and no go. The engine is an ultra-reliable 302 cubic inch Ford with just the right tweaks for performance, sound, and appearance. A computer controlled fuel injection system by Imagine Injection gives the motor modern performance, and looks tremendous doing it. Ignition components from MSD and Mallory keep the candles lit. The MSD box is stealthily hidden beneath the batter. Tube headers and dual exhaust let the engine breathe freely with the appropriate muscular tone. A Ford AOD 4-speed with overdrive automatic provides spirited performance around town and easy cruising on the highway. In keeping with the high-end quality and driveability of this build, the rear axle is a 57 9-inch Ford limited slip with a 3.50:1 gear ratio. The cars electrical system was upgraded to 12-volt operation for added safety and reliability. It also allows the installation of a 12-volt electronic AM/FM radio with CD player and provisions to connect your Ipod or other devices. Electric wipers are there for you if you should ever need them. Once inside, youll find an authentic, original Thunderbird experience. Two-tone black and white bucket seats highlight the interior, which also features beautiful engine-turned trim on the dash and doors. A clever upgrade is the replacement of the tach and clock with accurate AutoMeter units in the original locations. Once underway, the handling is heavenly as you guide the car with the original steering wheel on a Flaming River tilt column with power steering and a Flaming River rack. Wilwood power front disc brakes is another subtle but important mod to bring performance from vintage to modern. Yet some things are timeless. Among them are chrome wire wheels, especially on Baby Birds. With spinners too. They are set off nicely with Coker Classic wide whitewall radial tires. Oh yes, more meticulousness. All the hardware - every nut and bolt - used in this build is stainless steel, as is the exhaust system.
