From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
This 1955 Torch Red Ford Thunderbird is indeed a unique vehicle. In its 64 years it has been owned for 57 of those years by two individuals. The current owner has owned the car for 17 years. The current owner acquired the car from the previous owner`s estate after his death. He acquired the car in 1962 making its last two owners having held the car for 57 years.
The car has the standard 292 cubic inch overhead valve V-8 and a standard transmission. The standard transmission was an option on the car from the factory but the majority of the cars sold had automatic transmissions making standard shift transmissions hard to find. This car is a convertible with a fiberglass top which can be easily removed and is painted with the matching Torch Red.
The current owner has made major improvements to the car including a professional paint job involving stripping to bare metal, primed and painted the original red color. The seats and carpet were redone with original matching vinyl. Substantial engine and drive train work has been done using rebuilt or new parts made to original specifications. A list of improvements is available on request.
The car has been garaged consistently over the years. The rehab expert who painted the car indicated it is nearly always necessary to sand blast before undercoating older vehicles but indicated he did not consider it necessary because there wasn`t a rust problem.
The car is presently loaned and on display at the Kansas City Auto Museum, 15095 W 116th St. Olathe, KS 66062. This is truly a rare opportunity to acquire a stock 1955 Thunderbird in excellent condition for an affordable price.
