From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Gateway Classic Cars of Tampa is happy to have this incredible 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air listed for sale. Modifying any Tri-Five Chevy is sure to upset some purists, but its hard to find any faults with the work done to this beauty. Having undergone a complete frame-off restoration, the heart of this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air is a supercharged 454 CID V8. This 1990 marine high-performance big block engine was line honed, decked and balanced, and it was extensively upgraded with J-E Pistons, Speed Pro Plasma-Moly Rings, Eagle Rods, Comp Cams Pure Energy Camshaft, Comp Cams Magnum Roller Rocker Arms, Crane Roller Lifters and an MSD ignition system including high torque starter, distributor, coil and cap. This engine mates to a TH400 Turbo 400 with Gear Vendor Under/Over drive, a TCI 2500 Stall Converter and a Hurst shifter. This power is sent to the rear wheel through a nine-inch Ford rear end that has been shortened by eight inches for the mini tubs, and overall performance and handling has been optimized with tubular steel A-arms, Hotchkiss dropped spindles and four-wheel disc brakes. And thats just the performance side of this car. The body is straight and was given a rich, custom black-over-burgundy paint job with beautiful chrome and 15-inch Center Line wheels. To maintain the stock look of this car, the blown big block is mounted 6.5 inches lower and moved back a full eight inches to accommodate the blower without requiring any changes to the hood. Even the inside received a custom touch replacing the standard 55 interior with a leather-wrapped cabin out of a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. Options on this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air include air conditioning, AM/FM radio, cassette, power brakes, power steering, power seats, tilt steering wheel, seat belts, leather interior, aluminum alloy wheels and radial tires.
