Subtle and careful updates were made through 1954, the last model year for Pontiacs first postwar body styles. Advertising copy declared Dollar for Dollar, You Cant Beat a Pontiac. Cadillac and Oldsmobile may have garnered most of the headlines of the era with their new OHV V-8 engines, but Pontiacs simple philosophy and broad model range quietly garnered buyers and marque loyalists, with Pontiac holding a commendable 7th-place position in American automobile sales rankings. The 1954 Chieftain and Chieftain Deluxe model lines rode the familiar 122-inch wheelbase chassis. Pontiacs trusty L-head inline-6 and 8-cylinder engines returned for one last time, as new OHV V-8s were being readied for their 1955 debut. Both the six and straight-8 engines were similar in layout and respected for their durability and reliability. The six displaced 239 CI and was rated 115 HP with a manual transmission and 118 with the 4-speed Dual-Range Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, the difference due to a slightly higher compression ratio for the automatic cars, 7.0 vs 7.7:1. All Pontiac engines employed solid valve lifters and Carter 2-barrel carburetors for 1954.Formerly under collector ownership and care, this wonderfully preserved and presented 1954 Chieftain Deluxe is a two-door sedan, attractively finished in 1950s-appropriate Shannon Green, complemented by a Raven Black roof and Green and Grey patterned cloth 2-tone upholstery. Powered by Pontiacs signature 239 CI inline-6 with a Dual-Range 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, the Chieftain Deluxe is equipped with a pushbutton AM radio, electric clock, Pontiacs trademark illuminated hood ornament, rear fender skirts, and steel wheels mounting full wheel covers and 1950s-style wide Whitewall tires. Ready to collect, show, and enjoy as desired, this 1954 Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe is a rare and important example of the GM divisions rich legacy.
