Classic Car Overview

The Pegaso Z-102 named after the mythical winged horse was one of the most striking sports cars ever produced in Spain. Built in the former Hispano-Suiza factory in Barcelona Pegaso cars were true to their heritage featuring advanced engineering including a high-performance twin-cam V8 engine with desmodromic valves. Pegaso cars were created with the intention of challenging Ferrari on the world stage and for a time they succeeded-at one point the Z-102 held the title of the worlds fastest production car with a top speed of 150 mph. Alongside this impressive performance Pegasos were among the most expensive and exclusive cars of their time with only 84 examples ever built many featuring bespoke coachwork from Europes leading carrozzerias.Among the most bold examples of Pegaso coachwork are those designed by the renowned Parisian coachbuilder Saoutchik. The car offered here one of just seven Saoutchik Berlinetta Series II cars built on the Z-102 chassis features dramatic and unique styling. Each of these Saoutchik-bodied cars was individualized with subtle variations in design but they all shared a signature low roofline and voluptuously curved fenders. The front arches sweep over the Marchal headlights enhancing the cars sleek powerful profile while the rear arches flare out to emphasize the aggressive stance.Chassis number 0102-150-0161 stands as an example of this exceptional craftsmanship. Delivered with right-hand drive-though curiously the 150 in the chassis number indicates a left-hand drive configuration-the car was equipped with the desirable twin-ignition cylinder head. According to the authoritative reference Ricart-Pegaso: La Pasi n del Autom vil by Carlos Mosquera and Enrique Coma-Cros its first owner was Domecq de la Riva believed to be the prominent Spanish aristocrat Don Pedro Domecq de la Riva.Following its time in Spain the Pegaso was exported to the United States before finding its way to Frans Pelzer of Maastricht Netherlands in 1983. Pelzer a noted Pegaso enthusiast recounted the cars solid original condition in an interview with Pegaso historian Mario Laguna (La Aventura Pegaso pp. 50-51) stating that approximately 95 percent of the cars original parts were used during its restoration. The only significant replacement was the gearbox which was swapped with a correct unit from another Pegaso. With restoration nearly complete the car was sold to the late Lorenzo Zambrano a renowned collector of coachbuilt sports cars in 2005. It was completed stateside and went on to secure second in Class at the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance. The car was also displayed at the Retromobile show in Paris in 2015 during a special Pegaso commemoration where members of the Saoutchik family present at the event named it their favorite example of the marques work. Later it changed hands again winning the Amelia Award in the special Pegaso class at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours dElegance. The current owner has cared for the car since 2021 ensuring it remains in outstanding condition with beautiful leather upholstery and gleaming paint and chrome. It returned to Pebble Beach in 2023 where it was shown after undergoing extensive mechanical and cosmetic service by Fast Cars Ltd. in Redondo Beach California. This work completed between December 2022 and February 2024 included a valve adjustment engine reseal and service to the transmission differential braking system and suspension with over $150000 in documented invoices on file. This Pegaso Z-102 Saoutchik Berlinetta represents the pinnacle of engineering design and craftsmanship. A rare and significant example of one of the worlds most exclusive sports cars it is a crown jewel in any collection ready for further concours appearances and spirited drives.
