Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Classic Car Overview

When it was introduced for the 1954 model year, the Nash Metropolitan was something a whole lot different for America in the mid-1950s. In a country where large, chrome-bedecked automobiles roamed the streets and highways, the little Metro was tiny, even smaller than a VW Beetle. As such it offered a peppy, nimble driving experience, great fuel economy (30-40 mpg) and the ability to fit in parking spaces everything else but a motorcycle had to pass up. Available in coupe and convertible body styles, It was also undeniably cute.

Here we have a 1954 Nash Metropolitan that is still ably powered by its 1.2-liter inline four running through the original 3-speed manual transmission. Its most recent owner, an older gentleman, had the car for about 10 years, during which time he tinkered with it, took it to shows and just thoroughly enjoyed it. He sadly passed away recently, but before he did his son and our dealership promised to only sell the car to someone who would lovingly care for it as much as he did.

Impressively solid underneath as well as on top, the Metros Turquoise paint has a nice luster, as does the various chrome trim accents. The interior is in fine shape and looks to be original, given the upholstery pattern, but were admittedly not certain. Mechanically, the Nash is road ready and is a hoot to drive. All in all, this Metropolitan would make fun and very affordable entry into the vintage and collector car world. Just imagine hitting a summer bar-b-cue, showing it off at a Cars and Coffee or taking your better half out for a hot fudge sundae on a warm summers night.
