VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Paris event, 28 January 2026.
Offered Without Reserve 270,000 - 300,000 EUR

  • Believed to be one of just 216 examples of the 300 S Coup manufactured by Mercedes-Benz
  • Delivered new to Henkel AG & Co board member Dr Wilhelm Julius Manchot
  • Powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine coupled to a four-speed manual transmission
  • Accompanied by a history file that contains a copy of the factory build sheet; further supplied with owners manuals and a tool roll

The Mercedes-Benz 300 series was revealed at the 1951 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung. In mid-1952, Mercedes-Benz announced the 300 S or Super combining elements of the existing 300 series with the upcoming 300 SL. The 300 S was available in cabriolet, roadster, or coup body styles with just 216 cars made of the latter, including the car offered here.

This example was delivered new to Henkel AG & Co board member Dr Wilhelm Julius Manchot in January 1954. Originally finished in Black paint, the vehicle features a rare steel sliding roof among a long list of special request options shown on the accompanying build sheet.

In 1960 the Mercedes-Benz was sold to its second owner in Bonn, Germany. Over the ensuing decades the vehicle found homes in Cologne, Munich, and finally near Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria under its current owner. While the Coup remained largely unrestored over the years, the first refresh was provided in 2012, and the exterior was treated to a fresh coat of black paint in 2020. The 300 S Coup is accompanied by a history file containing a copy of the factory build sheet, owners manuals, further to a tool roll.
