Classic Car Overview
Launched as the first-ever American two-seater sports car, the 1954 Corvette, from its second year of production, boasts a sleek, timeless design defined by its striking rounded body lines, prominent front grille, and distinctive fiberglass construction. This second-year example of the first-generation Corvette, produced from 1953 to 1962, represents an iconic American sports car with a timeless, jet-age design. Limited production meant only about 3,640 units were built for the 1954 model year, making every surviving example a genuine piece of automotive history. This car was purchased three years ago from the Gateway Automobile Museum Collection, and stands as a well-restored, correct example, finished in the popular factory color combination of Polo White over Sportsman Red upholstery. The car rides on period-correct Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewall tires and retains its original-style Daytona weave carpeting inside. Mechanically, the car features an independent front suspension with coil springs, a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel drum brakes, and manual recirculating-ball steering, riding on a 102-inch wheelbase and weighing about 2,850 pounds. The rear axle carries a 3.55:1 ratio. Under the hood, this American classic is powered by the 235 cubic-inch Blue Flame inline-six engine, featuring a unique intake manifold and triple carburetors producing approximately 150 horsepower, mated to a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. This combination delivers a top speed of approximately 100 mph - modest by modern standards, but historically significant as the drivetrain that launched an American legend.
The odometer displays 61,516 miles at the time of cataloging, believed to be original. A few minor imperfections are worth noting for transparency: the radio is not currently functional, and there is a small chip in the paint on the gas flap door. The car is also sold complete with its side curtains in a bag, a matching spare wheel, a lug wrench, and the jack - a wonderful set of original accessories that often go missing over the decades. This Corvettes ownership history is particularly well documented. Research indicates the car was restored in 2000, and that same year it earned an AACA National First Prize at the Hershey Fall Meet under David L. Whitchurchs ownership. Its also said to have won an NCRS Gold Award that same year before attending another successful AACA event in 2001. A Connecticut collector later sold the car in 2013, when it entered the Gateway Automobile Museum Collection as a prime example of both 1950s Americana design and Americas earliest true sports car. It has remained under its current ownership for the past three years. Despite its modest power rating compared to modern sports cars, the 1954 Corvette is celebrated for shaping American sports car culture and pioneering the legendary Corvette legacy that continues to thrive today. As a vintage collectible, this Corvette represents an enduring symbol of American automotive innovation and remains a sought-after treasure for classic car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
