Classic Car Overview

1953 Willys M38A1 - Tastefully Civilianized Classic 4x4

Offered for sale is a 1953 Willys M38A1, the iconic Korean Warera military Jeep that bridged the gap between the rugged WWII M38 and the modern civilian CJ series. This example retains the legendary military-grade build quality of the M38A1 while embracing a clean, refined civilian aesthetic that makes it far more approachable as a vintage driver.

Unlike most M38A1s finished in olive drab with period military equipment, this Jeep was refinished in gunmetal gray metallic under previous ownership, giving it a striking presence that pops in the sunlight. The look is completed by 16-inch polished Ion Alloy wheels wrapped in 235/85 Firestone Transforce HT tires, providing a confident stance that suits the Jeeps off-road heritage without feeling overdone. Exterior features include: folding windshield, lotted grille, left-side mirror, red-finished fuel tank and filler cap, and aftermarket taillights.

Power comes from the Willys Hurricane F-head 134.2ci (2.2L) inline-four, factory rated at 72 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. The F-head design overhead intake valves with flathead exhaust valves offered improved breathing and drivability over the earlier Go Devil L-head engine. Transmission is a T-90 3-speed manual. Transfer Case is a Dana 18 dual-range (high/low). Drivetrain offers selectable 4WD.

The electrical system has been converted to 12 volts for improved usability, and a trickle charger quick-disconnect is installed (charger included). Recent maintenance includes replacement of the fuel pump, various gaskets, one leaf spring, and all shocks. Power delivery is smooth, and the Jeep starts reliably.

The frame and undercarriage are in excellent condition for a vehicle of this age. Drum brakes are fitted at all four corners, and suspension refresh work has been performed, contributing to a solid, confidence-inspiring ride.

The interior stays true to the Jeeps utilitarian roots while presenting cleanly. Black vinyl front bucket seats are paired with a removable Kaiser Willys rear bench seat, and the signature red-finished fuel tank beneath the drivers seat serves as a vivid reminder of the vehicles military origins. Interior highlights include: passenger grab handle, billiards-style shift knob, drivers-side glovebox, under-seat passenger storage compartment.

Instrumentation consists of a centrally mounted 74-mph speedometer with auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and amperage. The fuel gauge is currently inoperable. Odometer currently showing approximately 500 miles since restoration (total mileage is unknown). A reprint of the original M38A1 service manual is included.

With an 81-inch wheelbase and 133-inch overall length, the M38A1 offers a noticeably improved ride over its predecessors while remaining compact enough to fit easily into modern parking spaces. It is equally at home cruising around town or taking the long way back on unpaved roads. Current owner uses it for fair weather daily driving to work and running errands in downtown Charleston.

This M38A1 was refurbished in 2020 under previous ownership and acquired by the current owner in 2022. It has since been regularly maintained by a professional mechanic. The Jeep is titled in South Carolina as a 1953 model year utilizing a North Carolina issued identification number.

Collectors prize the M38A1 for its toughness, simplicity, and place in Jeep history. This example offers a compelling alternative to stock military restorations: authentic military engineering, upgraded drivability, and a distinctive civilian presentation that turns heads everywhere it goes. Be prepared for questions and compliments every time you take her out! If you value post-war American engineering and military heritage but prefer a Jeep you can enjoy and show without strict authenticity constraints, this M38A1 is an excellent fit.

Located in Charleston, South Carolina. Local pickup is preferred. Buyer responsible for shipping arrangements if required.
