Classic Car Overview
Riding high on the success of the TC after WWII, the MG TD was the marques direct answer to Americas postwar appetite for nimble, stylish sports cars. Many U.S. servicemen returning from Europe brought home the T-series Midgets they had come to love overseas, sparking a transatlantic romance with British motoring that would last for decades. The TD marked a significant evolution from its prewar predecessor, offering a longer frame and wheelbase for improved passenger comfort. Handling and road feel were vastly improved thanks to rack-and-pinion steering, smaller wheels with larger tires, and independent front suspension. It was also the first of the T-series cars to be factory-built in left-hand drive-a welcome upgrade for U.S. buyers-alongside a more user-friendly four-speed gearbox. Optional all-weather accessories such as heaters, tonneau covers, and side curtains further broadened the TDs appeal, especially in cooler climates. Production continued until 1953, but the TDs timeless style and engaging driving experience remain a draw for collectors and enthusiasts to this day. This 1953 MG TD is finished in classic MG Red over a Biscuit interior, paired with a tan convertible top and matching side curtains. According to the MG T-Register, chassis TD/23316 was completed at the Abingdon Works in December 1952 and built to North American export specification. While the early history of this particular example remains unknown, its clear the car underwent a comprehensive restoration. Recent maintenance is visible throughout: newer brake hoses and lines, a polished stainless-steel exhaust system, and American Classic whitewall radials dated 2015. Per factory records, TD/23316 was originally equipped with engine no. TD2/23157, though it currently runs with XPAG engine no. 8000-sourced from a May 1951-built car. Cosmetically, the MG Red paint shows a brilliant shine, well paired with the Biscuit interior and tan top. The chrome bumpers reflect beautifully, though some of the smaller brightwork could benefit from minor attention. Additional charming details include a front badge bar with dual chrome fog lamps and a reproduction British registration plate denoting the cars model year. At the rear, a chrome luggage rack with leather tie-down straps accompanies a full-size whitewall spare. In 2024, ITS ALIVE! performed a full tune-up, installed a new starter and brake light switch, and upgraded the fuel hoses to braided stainless lines. Most recently, in Summer 2025, a brand-new fuel tank was sourced and painted body color before being installed with a new sending unit and fuel pump. Now part of ITS ALIVE!s owned inventory, this TD benefits from both recent servicing and in-house attention, making it a turn-key example ready to be enjoyed.
