Classic Car Overview

Heels off the success of the TC after WWII, The TD was MGs direct response to Americas post-war, car-hungry economy. Many returning American servicemen had brought home the T-series Midget that they had drove in Europe, and it wasnt long before America started its love affair with small British Sports Cars. Improvements over the previous, pre-war, design included a longer frame and wheelbase for greater passenger comfort. Steering feel and handling were improved with the use of rack & pinion steering gear, smaller wheels with larger tires, and fully independent suspension upfront. The TD was the first of the T-series cars to be offered in Left Hand Drive and additional features, like a four-speed transmission with more modern gearing, further enhancing driving capabilities on the paved American motorways. Optional all-weather protection in the forms of heaters, tonneau covers & side curtains assisted sellers in colder climates, and paved the way for future models that were more tailored to American buyers. TD production lasted until 1953, though its timeless charm continues to garnish attention from gearheads all over the world. The 1953 MG TD featured here is finished in MG Red over a Biscuit Interior with a matching Tan Convertible Top & Side Curtains. Per the MG T-register records, TD/23316 was completed at the Abingdon works in December 1952, and assembled to North American export specification. Most of the cars specific history is unknown, though it is evident that the car was the subject of a thorough restoration. Evidence of recent maintenance is visible throughout the vehicle with newer brake lines and hoses, a polished stainless-steel exhaust system, and American Classic whitewall radial tires which display 2015 date codes. Per the factory production records available TD/23316 was assembled with engine no. TD2/23157. Under the bonnet, however, lies XPAG engine no. 8000; originally from a May 1951 built example. On the exterior, a brilliant sheen is observed from the red paint finish, further complimented by the tan convertible top and matching Biscuit interior. While the chrome bumpers still reflect like a mirror, the smaller bits of brightwork could benefit from a degree of restoration. Touches of class & charm are exhibited throughout the vehicle including a front badge bar with dual chrome fog lights, below which lies a reproduction British Registration tag representing the year, make and model of the vehicle. In the rear youll find a chrome, folding luggage rack with leather hold down straps alongside a full-sized matching whitewall spare. In 2024, ITS ALIVE! performed a full tune up in addition to replacing the starter, brake light switch, fuel pump, and replacing the fuel delivery hoses with an upgraded braided stainless set. With a smart appearance, tasteful touches and recent servicing, this TD is ready to make a statement with you behind the wheel! ITS ALIVE! is pleased to represent this classic motorcar on behalf of its owner to ensure to find its future home.
