Since the Curved Dash model of 1901, no other introduction in Oldsmobile history has made such an outsized impact as the Rocket V-8, which debuted on 15 September 1948. Considered Americas first modern overhead-valve V-8, available in both Oldsmobile 88 and 98 models, the new engine offered impressive stats for the day: 303 cubic inches, 7.25:1 compression ratio, 135 horsepower at 3,600 rpm, and 263 pound-feet of torque at 1,800 rpm. Indeed, many consider the Rocket V-8-powered Oldsmobile 88 to be the proto-muscle car, preceding the genres proliferation by over a decade. True to form, an 88 convertible paced the 1949 Indy 500 and Oldsmobile took the checkered flag at six out of the nine NASCAR races that season.

Styling for the 88 was all-new, too. Called Futuramic by Oldsmobile marketers, the sleek Harley Earl design coincided with the industrys first production hardtop convertible. Dubbed the Holiday Hardtop body style, it offered the attractive, pillarless silhouette of a typical droptop with the practicality of a closed roof. But it was the more conventional Club Coupe that would dominate NASCAR. For 1950, much remained the same with the 88. Styling revisions included a new chrome trim spear beginning at the headlight and running across the front fender through the door. A single-piece curved windshield was a mid-year upgrade.

This 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 Club Coupe is one of 21,456 examples made for the model year and was acquired from the Alan Egleseer collection in 2020. Accurate to its trim tag in the engine bay, the car is finished in an attractive color scheme of Crest Blue with a dark blue roof over striped, grey broadcloth. The presentation is neat, with much of the paint and interior appearing to be original. The odometer showed 24,921 miles at the time of cataloguing.
