VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

This is not hype, not puffery. Just in, one of the most incredible MG TDs we have ever been lucky to find.

30,000 original miles with every indication of it being accurate... matching numbers, fairly early car, awesome engine.....135-145 psi compression in every cylinder, no smoke. Starts instantly, runs flawlessly, even fun to see how smoothly it pulls away from a stop sign in 2nd gear (or, one might suggest, effortless to convert the trans into an all synchro unit by not using 1st gear),, gears are quiet (even 1st and reverse), good synchromesh, an excellent T Series gearbox.

Body is absolutely excellent and in original paint. Granted, the paint is flaking off in many spots BUT with original paint, no sign of ANY plastic filler (that is, unlike the bulk of TDs in the world. Hence photos under the fenders, behind the doors and in front where many TDs have bubbles coming through plastic filler) So, flawed paint but a close to perfect body.

Chrome is all very good, top and side curtains all new tan cloth (the most expensive) the entire interior and dash is very nice, all working original gauges and switches, wiring harness looks quite good, exhaust quiet.

AMAZING in that (as they say) 'everything works. Every gauge, every light, horn, wipers, driving lights, brake lights.....all work properly. Doors shut far better than most TDs, no rattles, wood framing appears to be excellent. And when you drive over a rough road, no rattles or shakes

From what I was told, when acquired from an old time friend, maybe just repaint the car, do some minor detailing, and have it for sale. But for now, will leave the paint just the way it is so we can show a prospective buyer how perfect the body is (without resorting to using X Ray vision). And if a buyer wants it painted? Fine. and in its original color or performing a color change (easy to do, just painting the firewall and under the fenders).

If you appreciate details and originality, car has its original (and often missing) original oil bath air cleaner assembly, had original 'King of the Road' headlights and original wing lights. All new brakes, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, flex lines. And new shock absorbers.

I think this car runs and drives better than 95% of the TDs we have had over the last fifty years. And with paint and remarkably little else, one can have a fabulous not very expensive collector's car.

The words of my employees when they viewed it underneath...."looks like a concours car from the bottom." And I agree.....floors, body timbers, body mounts, chassis, and wiring almost like new new.

(in fact, since I am entertaining the possibly of driving it home and enjoying if for the Summer and Fall, I thought 'why not just sand down the bare areas and find ten cans of a closely matched spray paint?) But the truth is, finding a car such as this, obviously cared for and with all new weather equipment (at least $2,000 worth), it would be a shame not to let the next owner see how perfect the body is.
