From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Coupe World War II put automobile production on hold. Production ceased on February 10, 1942 and resumed in 1946. When production began, most vehicles offered by marques were basically carried over from pre-war development. It was not until 1949 when Ford began offering new designs. They featured simple lines that were clean and well integrated into the body. In the front was a dramatic and artful bullet nosed grille. The era of pontoon fenders and high-riding automobiles was over, and Ford broke out of the gate with a smaller, stunningly stylish car that blended militaristic themes with slab-sided functionality. This car is the beneficiary of a full restoration and shows very nicely with no rust, nice paint and a hot rod engine. One has gotta love the front grille with its rocket styling and futuristic curvaceous body panels it was ready willing and able for the fab 50s to come along and provide its service to suburbia. Exterior All steel with attached chrome upfront sporting a center bullet style ring, and building on this design to complete the entire grille. Chrome is in great condition showing excellent with mirror-like all around. Steel shows with no rust and is all bathed in beautiful burgundy. This car has one of the coolest hood ornaments, with chrome shaped like a speeding train and topped with clear plastic in art deco style. A big body length trim spear is attached below the midline, and some fender skirts that just simply say very cool are mounted in the rear quarters. In back 2 squinting oval taillights are in the mid section of what seem to be the beginnings of fins along with shiny rear bumper below and chromed tipped exhaust peeking out from under. All 4 corners are the steel wheels painted black with chrome deep dish rings around the outside and bordered with wide whites, which are new reproduction style radials. Interior A total redux inside now showing in silver paint, deep burgundy vinyl and some gray textured broadcloth below for the door panels. Speaking of which, the most futuristic car badge is stuck to the sill on either door, and harkens back to the Harley Earl Daytona Trophy. A split bench in front, and full bench in the back, these seats have gray textured broadcloth inserts and beautiful burgundy bolsters and bases along with some burgundy piping for added effect. A shining example of the original metal dash with exterior matching curved design in pristine silver, houses a large centered speedo, with surrounding oil, battery, temp, and fuel gauges. We note a central clock is above an original oval faced round push button Ford radio. Fronting the dash is a cream bakelite steering wheel with chromed horn half ring and it has a knuckle buster knob attached. Very plush gray carpet is below in good condition, and above is a light gray headliner nice and tight with no stains. Drivetrain A flip of the hood and UH OHHHH! In beautiful full metallic form are 239 cubes of flathead V8 under the hood. This mill sports aftermarket Edelbrock heads, and it is topped by not one, not two,.... but THREE two-barrel carbs begging to be fed by the red hoses that attach to the fuel system. A 3-speed manual transmission propels you down the superhighways, and a 3.73 gear ratio rear axle helps save gas while doing it. Edelbrock headers for easy exhaling are also attached. Consigner states the original engine is available and still runs if you are interested...just ask! Undercarriage A few areas of rust remediation now fully structurally sound are seen particularly on the rear of this car, behind the fuel tank. All else is covered with rustproofing although it does not appear to be hiding anything nefarious. All solid framing and rockers that are rust free are seen. Independent coil springs for the front suspension, and leaf springs for the back along with drum brakes on all 4 corners can be duly noted. Drive-Ability This car fired right up, ran smoothly, and drove very nicely. It is a great cruiser, with a very comfortable interior. No power steering makes getting in and out of tight places a little strenuous, so use the necker , but once the car is rolling it steers surprisingly easy. Good brakes, and functional exterior lighting was a plus. An overall very nice example of the 1950 Custom Deluxe, nice paint, and new interior, as well as a stunning metal great looking engine and bay. Power to boot, and all executing very nicely.
