Classic Car Overview

1950 Dodge Wayfarer Convertible

For consignment, a 1950 Dodge Wayfarer convertible showing 89,615 miles, but the true miles are unknown. A roadster has a short retractable soft top and unzippable plastic window and the 1950 Wayfarer convertible represents the last true roadster produced by an American company with the exception of the Corvette and Kaiser, an appropriate degree of exclusivity for stock #8888.

Exterior
Reserved for convertibles in 1950, Cadet Red was one of 14 colors available on all Wayfarers and creates a vibrant, retina searing spectacle here in two stage application. A facelift for 1950 created a more streamlined grille with slightly girthier strakes just as the chrome age begins to take shape. A high nose is capped by a charging ram hood ornament followed by trim that flows back to the split windshield framed in red. In profile, the rear fenders become part of the rear fascia and hold horizontal trim that becomes more ornate under the regal tail lights. The front fenders are in line with the slap sided doors and are also bisected by trim. 15-inch wheels carry chrome wire covers and are wrapped in G78-15 tires with a mid 2024 date code. At a distance, the body and paint are fantastic. Up close, we note chips throughout, missing snap receivers for the top, a tear in the top, rough surface and filler in the threshold, blistering and bubbling, and some light pitting in some metal. There are numerous dry spots of paint and dings that do not show in our photos. In addition, the rear window zipper is broken and so the window cannot be closed.

Interior
Dark red vinyl door panels fall under the body colored header and present in good condition, as does the white vinyl bench seat. Up front, a gold steering wheel carries a full horn ring and a matching shifter on the column and the dashboard is ablaze with red paint surrounding square gauges and chrome accenting and a juke box like presentation of the radio and speaker, complete with Dodges royal golden coat of arms. Our red carpet is in fair condition and the huge trunk contains a covered spare and fender skirt from the passenger side.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 230ci L-head inline six cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor and 103 horsepower, showing in driver condition. It has a 3-speed FluidDrive transmission and power is routed to 3.90 gears in back. The car runs on a six volt system.

Undercarriage
Simple and clean and visually dominated by the X-frame, its here youll find a single exhaust running through a glasspack style muffler and exiting out back with a chrome deflector for show and go. Drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension is set up as front coil springs and rear leaf springs.

Drive-Ability
Other than some exhaust leaks, the engine runs well and the big car tracks straight and handles well through our test loop. Theres a long hood in front and a sizable decklid in back, but the car is easy to maneuver on our open tarmac. All functions operate as they should on this uncommon Dodge. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Last of the American roadsters and one of just 2,903 produced!
