From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Gateway Classic Cars of Houston is proud to present this maroon metallic 1949 Mercury Club Coupe for sale. This beautiful all-metal custom Merc went through a frame-off restoration and is powered by a Chevrolet 350 CID V8 thats backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission. The 700R4 is controlled by the ubiquitous Lokar shifter, which adds a nice hot rod touch, and the drivetrain has just a little over 2000 miles on it. The 350 is topped by an aluminum intake with a Holley 4BBL carb with its snorkel scoop, and she runs smooth and strong. Twin Flex-a-Lite electric fans assist the aluminum flex fan in keeping operating temps in the good range in all kinds of driving conditions. A Mallory Unilite electronic ignition distributor and coil supply the spark, and the spent fossils are evacuated by coated cast iron manifolds into a true dual exhaust. The cast iron manifolds help keep things muffled enough so that you can hear your tunes, and the dual exhaust has just enough of that muscle sound to keep you entertained when youre not listening to Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen belt out Hot Rod Lincoln through the four 2-way speakers that are powered by the Blaupunkt Lexington AM/FM/Cassette player. Inside, youll discover that the carpet is like new, the white-trimmed scarlet synthetic leather seating is in great shape, and the headliner is as well. Youll also appreciate the functionality that the custom overhead console adds. A set of vintage styled VDO gauges keep the driver informed about the fuel, oil pressure, volts, and engine temp. Another nice upgrade for the driver is the leather-wrapped steering wheel, which sits atop the new tilt steering column. Outside, the maroon metallic paint really pops in the sun, and the abundant chrome gleams. Front disc brakes help bring things to a stop quickly, and the Toyo Wide White Wall Radial Tires provide a smooth ride and vintage look at the same time. Additional features and options on this 1949 Mercury Club Coupe include cold Air Conditioning, AM/FM/Cassette Radio, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Radial Tires, Spare tire and tire jack, Tilt Wheel, and Vinyl Interior.
