From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Rarely do you find a lead sled thats this affordable. But this 1949 Mercury Coupe already has all the updates you love including proper V8 power offered right now for an irresistible price. Someone has already taken the time on this one to make it a custom machine. That means all the features you love, like the streamlined front end with expertly deleted trim so nothing gets in the way of the shine from the grille and bumper. The profile has cool street machine features on display like dual spotlights and lake pipes. And out back theres plenty of chrome on the rear bumper, and we all love how the dual exhaust reaches beyond it to really finish off the extra-long look. And of course, streamlined means great details, like frenched headlights, shaved door handles, rear fender skirts, and a lowered suspension. So someone took the time to create a mean purple machine. Inside, the full gray package is a custom setup that looks nice against the exterior purple. This is a comfortable addition, including cloth seats borrowed from a later model Buick. More of donor car can be seen in upgrades like the three-spoke steering wheel and tilt column. This was built to enjoy the drive so you get the right features like auxiliary gauges and power front windows. Plus, a true cruiser needs proper tunes, and thats why theres an AM/FM/CD stereo that a USB input and Bluetooth. So feel free to bring the most modern music players into this very vintage ride. Under the hood is one of the best upgrades of all. Its a strong-running 350 cubic-inch crate V8, and its dressed to impress. Theres plenty of polish on the flame-etched valve covers, intake, large air snorkel, and much more. Plus, not only are the fenders walls and firewall painted to match the exterior, but so is the engine block! More than just look great, this also has the right supporting components, like upgraded pulleys with serpentine belt and a Ron Davis aluminum radiator. The V8 inhales deeply with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and aluminum intake. And this makes proper street machine sounds out of the glasspack-style dual exhaust. Add in power steering, front disc brakes, and a three-speed automatic transmission, and this is a lead sled thats easy to enjoy everywhere. This 49 Mercury is an icon, and rarely is it so obtainable. So hurry up can call today!
