Classic Car Overview
This 1948 Lincoln Continental convertible shows just how prestigious a top-of-the-line automobile used to be. It wasn't simply about the nicest materials or the best features. Rather, it was a massive presence and swanky styling that really set things apart. Think how impressive this vehicle must have been almost eighty years ago, especially with overdrive and hydraulic power windows. Even today this big V12 Continental will make an impression wherever it goes.
1948 was the final year for the first-generation Continental which spanned WWII. It was a very exclusive car with only 452 convertibles produced that year! This well-preserved specimen looks fantastic underneath without any signs of rust. It wears an older black repaint that still shines nicely. Along with the factory art deco trim pieces, there is no missing that enormous front grille which has plenty of sparkle. A unique design feature is the use of pushbutton door operators in place of a conventional handles. The power convertible top and frame are in excellent condition and operate smoothly. And of course such a car wouldn't be complete without bias ply wide whitewall tires (Firestone 7.00-15).
Another distinction of the 1948 Continental is that it represents the final year of an American V12 engine. In this case it was a derivative of Fords Flathead platform and displaced a relatively modest 292 cubic inches. It is surprising how easily this engine starts and idles from cold (assuming you know how to operate the pull-out ignition switch). It makes lovely mechanical sounds and runs smoothly with a single 2-barrel carburetor that was recently replaced. Note there are some minor oil drips commensurate with its age and era. The three-speed column shifter transmission shifts smoothly without any surprises, and the overdrive unit operates as expected. The brakes, steering, and suspension are all in proper operating condition as well.
The red leather interior appears highly original except for the front seat cushion and carpet. It is in remarkable condition for a 1948 model. The dashboard makes it clear this is not just ordinary transportation. Rather, the gauges, center control panel, glove box lid, and steering wheel all present plenty of bling. The headlights, turn signals, horn, heater, defroster, vacuum wipers, and parking brake all work properly. So do the hydraulic power windows and top. You have probably heard of a Continental Kit for storing a spare tire; this is indeed the model that gave birth to that moniker. It makes for plenty of storage space in the very deep trunk compartment.
This Lincoln is not your average classic car. It is a statement to another era and a testimonial of how things used to be. And while this collectible obviously presents a stately image, it is much more than just a stationary exhibit. This one is ready to hit the road and remind everyone what a first-generation Continental was all about.
