Classic Car Overview

This 1948 Chrysler Town and Country is an elegant 4 door post-war Woody sedan that has been designated as a Full Classic by the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA). With the onset of World War II and United States entry into the War, American automobile production ground to a halt as Americas automakers shifted their lines to assist in the War effort. When the War ended, Americas automakers began to restart automobile production; however, they were met with several impediments. First, a nationwide materials shortage persisted and delayed the their ability to build cars after the War. Second, the automakers were not able to retool their lines quickly enough so many American cars from 1946 through 1948 largely resembled their pre-war counterparts. Nonetheless, the companies spruced up their pre-war cars exteriors with additional trim so as to differentiate them from the pre-war designs. For Chrysler, working off an idea that was said to have originated from the mind of Chryslers President at the time, David A. Wallace, that meant introducing the new Town & Country models featuring steel bodies adorned by white ash and mahogany paneling. The new post-war Town and Countries came in a variety of body styles including 4 door sedans, and convertibles, unlike the pre-war Town & Country models which were station wagons. The resulting 1946-48 Town & Country cars were, and continue to be, absolutely gorgeous, well-crafted automobiles from nearly every angle. The interiors were quite impressive as well, with buyers having the option of Leather with Bedford Cord inserts or fully leather bench seats, along with beautiful wooden coachwork throughout. In total, Chrysler produced a mere 3,994 Town and Country 4 door sedans between 1946 through 1948, of which 1,119 built in 1948, making this particular example quite a rare piece of Mopar history. Powering this 48 Town and Country Woody is a 250.6 Cubic Inch Spitfire Inline 6 cylinder engine fed by a single barrel carburetor which together were said to have produced 114 horsepower when new. The Spitfire Six is mated to the innovative Gyrol Fluid-Drive Semi-Automatic Transmission that makes for a truly enjoyable car to drive. With hydraulic drum brakes in all four corners, this 1948 Chrysler has a plenty of stopping power to bring this nearly 4,000 pound wood-bodied sedan to a complete stop. This 1948 Town & Country Woody is equipped with numerous upscale options! With dual outside chrome mirrors, maneuvering in and out of tight spaces at the local drive-in or car show is made much easier. The drivers side is also outfitted with a spotlight which is a nice period update that provides a bit more light at night. The front chrome bumper sports a trifecta of chrome bumper guards, positioned left, right, and center, which was an option back in 1948. The rear bumper is also chromed and features a nice pair of bumper guards as well. Mounted atop this 4 door Chrysler woody sedan is a wooden luggage rack should you have more luggage than can fit in the large trunk. A set of wide whitewall bias-ply tires, accented with full Chrysler chrome wheelcovers and chrome beauty rings, further elevate the luxurious look and feel of this post-war Mopar. The body of this 1948 Town and Country has been refinished in a beautiful Polo Green paint and it is set off by Ash wood framing and Mahogany veneer paneling on the doors, rear quarter panels, and trunk. The interior of this 1948 Chrysler Town and Country is simply stunning! The front and rear bench seats have been reupholstered in rich Green leather with Taupe Bedford Cord cloth inserts. The green carpeting, wooden door panels with green upholstered door handles, beige headliner with wooden bracing and dome lights, rear-mounted robe cord, ashtray, painted dash and steering wheel are all in wonderful condition and appear to retain a nice stock appearance. The instrument cluster is equipped with a 110 MPH speedometer, amp gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and fuel gauge. The center of the dash is highlighted with a push-button Motorola AM radio and speaker, along with a clock and various temperature and lighting controls. In front of the passenger is a locking glovebox with a Comfort Master heater mounted neatly under the dash. Whether youre buying your very first classic car or youre adding to an existing collection CCCA True Classics, this 1948 Chrysler Town and Country would make an excellent choice.
