Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

Very nicely partially restored tuxedo black with a near flawless red leather and matching black top. The chrome and stainless is all in good condition for its age, and the fit and finish of the body panels is quite nice.

No bondo or rust holes in this car;  it retains its original black paint from the doors back (sporting wonderful looking patina) while having new upholstery and front fenders and hood repainted in the last 11 months.

This particular Buick has been written up in several magazines and has even had a write up by noted automotive writer Tom Strongman. There are minor imperfections such as scratching but overall shows well. The newer black, Hartz style, power convertible top is in excellent condition and it looks great on the Buick. The Hydro-electric top and windows work perfectly. Inside, the interior has been freshly reupholstered and compliments the black. When the carpet was replaced there was an additional underlayment put down to reduce heat from the car into the interior. The door panels are in comparable condition.

The Buick Super is powered by the legendary 4.1L “Buick Fireball” inline-8 cylinder engine and it is a thrill to drive!  Mated to the engine is a 3-speed “three on the tree” manual transmission.

This car has been restored with the intent on driving to car shows. No excessive smoke on startup, no noises from the engine. The engine was rebuilt in the recent past and converted to a 12 volt system for convenience with an alternator in lieu of a generator and an electric fuel pump. It houses a set of original gauges that also look great.

The front suspension was rebuilt by an older Buick specialist out of Iowa. He also changed the rear gears from the original 4.56 to 3.90 gears. This allows the car to run at highway speeds and keep the RPMs lower. The car sits upon a newer set of 15” Tru-Spoke wire wheels with Buick center caps wrapped in P235/75R15 white wall radial tires. The underside of this car is very clean and completely undercoated, you can tell it has been garaged for most of its life.

Current owner has always maintained car by way of mechanic from Indiana Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg or equivalent specialty mechanic. Always wintered in heated climate controlled storage. All original precious metal and a significant car that runs and drives very smoothly as a Buick should. Will make an excellent tour car, and with the recent work undertaken could prove a worthy show for any Concours as well. I cannot express how much attention this car gets and how great it rides and drives.
