Chryslers beautiful, wood-bodied Town and Country models, produced in limited numbers from 1941 through 1950 with a hiatus during World War II, were instantly renowned for their exquisite construction, which included a combination of structural white ash and rich Honduran mahogany paneling, all skillfully finished with the same attention to detail as fine furniture. Artisanal touches such as exposed finger joinery and complex contours showcased a level of craftsmanship that was becoming increasingly rare in mass-produced automobiles.

The 1946 through 1948 Town and Country models are notable for being among the few post-war vehicles to have earned the coveted Full Classic title from the Classic Car Club of America, a vaunted status largely reserved for models produced before World War II, during a period in which flamboyant styling and exceptional craftsmanship combined to create exquisite rolling sculptures. Rare when new and rarer today, these artfully designed Chryslers with genuine timber bodywork rightly stand among the pre-war greats.

Offered in a range of body styles under Chryslers New Yorker, Royal, and Windsor lines, the Town and Country shared those models respective wheelbases and straight-eight engines. Though the convertible body style on the New Yorker platform is popular among collectors, the Windsor Town and Country Sedan is rarer.

The stunning Chrysler Windsor Town and Country Sedan offered here is one of only 2,651 produced for the 1947 model year, according to Chryslers Classic Woodie by Don Narus. West Coast collector John White is said to have acquired the car from its original California owners in 1998. He then commissioned marque expert John Munson to undertake a comprehensive restoration completed in 2004, according to correspondence on file. Photos showing the body fully disassembled and numerous parts invoices dating back to 2000 attest to the effort expended on bringing this Town and Country Sedan back to concours condition.

Beautifully finished in correct Polo Green over lovely green leather with plaid inserts, the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail bestowed during its restoration and subsequent upkeep still shines through. It is no wonder, then, that the sedan became a triple award-winner with a 100-point score from the Classic Car Club of America in 2018.

The car would remain a part of Whites Ramshead Automobile Collection in Sacramento for 22 years, before joining another esteemed collection in 2020. Even after changing hands, its accolades continued, as the car won an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior National First Prize in 2023 and became a Grand National winner in 2024.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/hf25/.
