Classic Car Overview
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys The Hershey Auction event, 7 - 8 October 2026.
Offered Without Reserve $90,000 - $120,000 USD
Introduced for 1939, Mercury was Edsel Fords vision for a brand positioned squarely between Ford and Lincoln, offering buyers a more refined and stylish automobile without the premium price of a luxury car. Designed to compete with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac in the growing medium-priced market, Mercury combined proven Ford engineering with distinctive styling and enhanced appointments. Named after the swift-footed Roman messenger god, the new division quickly established itself as an important pillar within the Ford Motor Company.
Sharing much of its engineering with Ford while drawing styling inspiration from the streamlined Lincoln-Zephyr, Mercury offered longer proportions, more upscale trim, and a greater sense of refinement than its corporate sibling. The formula proved immediately successful, with more than 70,000 Mercury vehicles sold during the inaugural 1939 model year, thanks in no small part to the dependable performance of Fords celebrated flathead V-8.
Following the end of World War II, Mercury resumed civilian production for 1946 with lightly updated versions of its successful pre-war models. Among the most desirable and rarest was the Station Wagon, now recognized as one of the finest expressions of the classic American woodie. While retaining the handsome body style introduced before the war, Mercury replaced the earlier gumwood construction with beautifully finished birch and rich mahogany body framing, creating an even warmer and more elegant appearance. Production totaled just 2,797 examples for the model year, making the Mercury Station Wagon considerably rarer than its Ford counterpart.
The example offered here is attractively finished in deep green, beautifully complemented by expertly finished wood bodywork, bright chrome trim, and a tan cloth interior. Desirable factory-style accessories include a driver-side spotlight, clock, heater, and rear-mounted spare tire enclosed within a painted metal cover. Color-matched steel wheels fitted with chrome trim rings, hubcaps, and wide whitewall tires complete the handsome period presentation.
Combining post-war optimism with timeless craftsmanship, the 1946 Mercury Station Wagon remains one of the most charming and collectable American wood-bodied automobiles of its era. Beautifully presented and considerably rare, this example represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of Mercurys most distinctive early post-war models.
