From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Savoy Faire is Everywhere

The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

Classic Car Overview

1946 Ford Deluxe The pent-up market created an unprecedented demand for new cars. Fords advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson, created a brilliant teaser campaign: Theres a Ford in your future. Until July, it showed only parts of the new Ford in a crystal ball; then there was a publicity blitz culminating in V-8 Day on October 26, 1945. More than a million Americans flocked into showrooms for the public introduction, and nearly half a million promptly placed their orders. For consignment, a mostly original 2-door 46 Deluxe Coupe, featuring the original engine, a restored exterior, plenty of chrome and brite work correct for 1946, and a beautiful interior. Exterior Maroon paint covers straight steel panels. By the mid 1940s gone are the running boards and fenders became more integrated to the body. A new horizontal grille with 3 metal bars and red stripe are topped by a larger bar that rises to the hood. A long brite work trim piece starts at the hood and moves back on the belt line to the rear for the car ending on the trunk. Smaller horizontal trim pieces adorn each fender which house wide white sidewall tires with F O R D engraved mood caps and chrome trim rings. Looking at the rear of the car, we see an oval rear window, which culminates over a bulbous trunk lid also sporting 2 horizontal trim pieces and is flanked by simple oval tail lamps. Interior One big difference for 1946 was the interior. This Coupe looks striking in navy blue and gray with cream bakelite accents and red striping. The instrument numerals are red on a black field with a chromed speedometer needle and clock hands. (An electric clock was standard on the Super DeLuxe) When one turned on the headlights at night, the gauges glow beautifully with the red numerals backlit and the edges of the chromed needles outlined in white light. Seats have been restored and the exact material is unknown, however it is in very good overall condition, as the door panels. Drivetrain This 1946 Ford has the 59 A V8 block that had been used in the Mercury from 1939; it displaced the same 239.4 cubic inches and develops an even 100 horsepower at 3,800 rpm. Meanwhile, the rear axle ratio went from 3.78:1 to 3.54:1. Undercarriage The X frame appears strong and sturdy, and some surface rust is seen, however no invasive rust is noted at this time. Floor pans, and fenders are in good condition. A mostly original Ford Deluxe, and maroon seems to be the color to go with, as there are other examples here at Classic Auto Mall in this garb, but not as original as this unit. A smooth driver, shifter, and runner, that is sure to bring a smile to the new owners face when the step in and drive away effortlessly!
