Although the World War II vehicle that comes to mind for most is the Willys that can draw a line to becoming Jeep, they were not the only company manufacturing these trucks. To keep up with the ever increasing demand as the war moved along, numerous other companies including Ford, were licensed to produce these trucks.

This 1942 example is one of the GPWs built by Ford and comes from a collection of military vehicles. Finished in Olive Drab Green as many of these were, the now famous door-less design is paired with a canvas folding soft top and flat metal fenders up front. The metal front bumper features a capstan winch, while the rear of the vehicle houses a spare tire mount and a spare fuel canister. In addition to the folding roof, the windshield also folds down, for some real wind in your hair driving. A matching trailer is affixed to the tow hitch with brake lights for additional carrying capacity.

The interior of the GPW is exceptionally sparse with two metal seats, with simple canvas-wrapped cushions up front. In the cabin, a period-correct SCR-284 radio station setup has been installed with a Crosley BC-654-A receiver/transmitter and an Electrolux PE-103-A power unit, as has a Stevens Manufacturing Co. M31C vertical pedestal machine gun mount. Additionally, a General Detroit Corp M2 Chemical Warfare decontaminating apparatus along with a Fyr-Fyter brass hand-pump fire extinguisher are fitted in the cabin.

Powering this GPW is a 2.2-Liter Go-Devil Flathead inline-4 that produces 60 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Although not a fast vehicle, these were built to be simple and stout, allowing for fixes in even the most remote locations. This is attached to a T-90 3-speed manual gearbox which can send power to all four wheels via a 2-speed transfer case. Solid axles front and rear make this truck nearly unstoppable when the roads get rough.

Equally as desirable for use as a car as it is for historical purposes, this Ford GPW is a museum exhibit on wheels. Making the ideal parade vehicle or, legitimate off-road capable truck, this GPW is ready for pretty much anything you can throw its way.
