Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

1941 Willys Coupe The 1941-1942 Willys Americar was an ordinary but well-built compact passenger car produced under the presidency of Joseph W. Frazer (later of Kaiser-Frazer) and engineered by Barney Roos. The L-head four-cylinder engine and ladder chassis were conventional, while the sharp-nosed body styling owed a little to previous Hudsons and Nashes. Straying from its original design, but still in keeping with the theme, we have a pro street version with an Outlaw body and chassis. Put in a massive 468ci V8 tunnel ram fed Chevrolet engine that shines bright enough you need a pair of shades to look at it. How about throwing in a custom interior, and some RED paint for the fiberglass body and kids we are ready to play. Exterior This Outlaw body, (consignor stated), fiberglass is all in very nice condition, and is all dipped in red. A big hood scoop is on to accommodate the dual quads and feed it plenty of forced air. The teardrop style headlights are nicely inset into the fenders and the pointy hood is flanked on the lower part of it by a rectangular shaped vertical toothed grille. The front bumper has been shaved for a simpler cleaner look. The back of this car has a beautiful line as it forms the split oval rear window and curvaceous trunk line. Inside those massive exaggerated but still tastefully shaped fenders are 18-inch front and 20-inch rear Billet Specialties polished 5-spoke wheels and are wrapped with low profile rubber (26x8.0R18s in front, and 29x15R20s on back. Smoke em if ya got em! Interior A swing of the doors and we are met with a totally custom interior with a RED upper dash with a white overstuffed and stitched Catskin leather panel below. The red dash front houses the cluster of Digital Dakota blue LED gauges and a shiny chromed Flaming River adjustable steering column. The lower front dash in Catskin leather houses the ignition, AM/FM/CD player and fan controls which all work and blow hot and cold air. A white molded plastic center console houses the B&M Street Bandit Shifter. Seats keep the two tone motif in hand with tan suede embroidered with 41 Willys gray stitching and Catskin leather in cream smooth inserts and bolsters. These seats are nice high back buckets and sport a mini recliner panel for your inner thighs. Brown carpet floods the floors under the seats and provides a beautiful contrast to the white plastic molded console. More Catskin leather for the door panels which have billet aluminum handles and armrests with suede inserts. Drivetrain Heres the money shot, with all chromed and polished add ons to the big mill. Our consignor states all the following facts...468ci with an Edelbrock Tunnel Ram. This is topped by dual Edelbrock 600cfm 4 barrel carbs and throws power rearward to a 4 speed 700R4 automatic. A Ford 9-inch rear with 3.73 posi rear axle makes the rear wheel spin. All looking fab under the hood, and all mechanically very sound. Undercarriage More mechanical eye candy under here with a Heidts Mustang 2 front suspension with coilovers. The rear has 4 link with coilover suspension. Power disc brakes are now on all 4 corners. Headers, and an MSD ignition are onboard for extra reliability. Drive-Ability A quick starter and as it warms up think of it as an orchestra getting ready to play a symphony. We took her out and from personal passenger experience this car is an E ticket ride! The radials take a while to hook up, but when they do, I would be willing to say you could do a low 11 second quarter with this car. And the sound is incredible. The car is very stable despite its power, and you can easily drive it normally on a back road or boulevard. A not often seen car even in its original form, but this Outlaw version is truly fun-tastic! With its wide fiberglass fenders, shaved hood, and stunning Red infused fiberglass. The massive hood scoop, tunnel ram hood, and the Catskin leather with suede accenting, my friends this is an awesome build with some serious balls. The engine and drivetrain are true visual bling. Sunglasses please, and Ill have a bullet to bite on during takeoff.
