Classic Car Overview

Spectacular show-quality restoration. Beautiful wood and paint, new correct interior. Rebuilt 201 cubic inch inline-6 runs great. New Goodyear tires. Nicely documented. A very high-quality woody wagon available for a fraction of the restoration cost.

Nobody built a bad car in 1941. It s as if the automakers knew these were the last cars people would be buying for a while and pulled out all the stops. That was true even over at Plymouth, where even their blue-collar wagons were beautifully styled and very well built. Recently treated to a comprehensive restoration by Customs Classics & Rods of Elk River, Minnesota, it presents in exceptional condition throughout. Most of the ash structure is original, with all-new mahogany panels to make it really glow. The steel panels were finished in green, giving it a period-correct look that contrasts beautifully with the golden wood bodywork. Finish quality is extremely good, probably better than Plymouth was offering in 1941, and there is surely a large 5-figure bill on the lovely chrome that s used throughout. The grille, bumpers (with accessory bumper guards), ornate headlight rings, and, of course, the Plymouth schooner hood ornament are all beautifully rendered and crisply detailed. Red accents highlight the many interesting features of the Plymouth, which looks far from a bargain-priced car.

The interior was likewise restored using correct materials, and the durable brown leatherette upholstery offers a factory look and feel. The big steering wheel frames a wide speedometer with auxiliary gauges at the outer edges, and the steel dashboard was finished with faux woodgraining, just to complete the effect. There are a few cracks on the steering wheel, but that seems to be the only possible demerit in an otherwise exceptionally well-finished interior. The gauges are all operational, but the factory AM radio and clock are not, unfortunately. Aftermarket seat belts have been added in the name of safety (and possibly to keep you in place during cornering, because that leatherette is slippery!) and there are rubber floor mats, as original. An accessory heater lives under the dash and works as it should, and there s a spare tire storage compartment built into the back of the front seat (a matching spare tire is included with the car). You ll also note this car has all three rows of seats, which is a somewhat unusual find in a woody of this era, and the cathedral-like ceiling is simply a work of art. There s even a bit of storage space behind the rear seat, accessible via the 2-piece tailgate that s ideal for a picnic or tailgate party.

All Plymouths in 1941 used the virtually indestructible 201 cubic inch inline-6, rated at 85 horsepower. But don t judge this over-achiever by the numbers, because it s torquey and energetic, pulling the wagon up to cruising speed easily and humming along happily at 50-55 MPH all day. It was fully rebuilt to stock specs during the restoration and today works like it should. It starts easily, idles smoothly, and makes a great 6-cylinder hum on the open road. It s correctly detailed with corporate silver engine enamel, a bit oil bath air cleaner atop the carburetor, and a fresh reproduction wiring harness with cloth-wrapped wires. There s also an accessory oil filter unit, a re-cored radiator up front, and little things like the fasteners and hose clamps are all period-correct. There might be a few very minor signs of use, but nothing noteworthy and it runs as great as it looks. The transmission is a standard 3-speed manual with light clutch action, and the factory rear end has 4.30 gears inside, so it feels energetic around town, which is its native habitat. The undercarriage is nicely detailed with rebuilt suspension, steering, and brakes, satin black paint on all the working parts, and more beautifully finished wood as a background. The single exhaust sounds appropriate, and is terminated in an accessory chrome tip just under the rear bumper. Factory steel wheels were painted and striped to match, then fitted with bright chrome hubcaps and trim rings, plus a brand new set of 6.00-16 Goodyear blackwalls, which are the perfect finishing touch.

Documentation is extensive, including a Chrysler Corporation Production Record, restoration photos, and other memorabilia. It also comes with a lot of period accessories like beach chairs, a picnic set, a vintage radio, and much more.

This is just about as good as old cars can get. The restoration had to be outrageously expensive, yet the car remains very reasonably priced. This is one of those times when buying someone else s finished product is the smart move, and this Plymouth is exceptional in every way that matters. For the money, you couldn t come close to duplicating it. Call today!
