Classic Car Overview

1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Sedan For consignment, a 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe which is in mostly original state save for a newer interior and an older color change repaint. With new brakes, the optional Mopar heater, mechanically in very good condition, it shows in typical early 40s styling with rounded exterior mounted fenders, running boards and a split front windscreen. Harken back to a simpler time, and era where motoring was in its infancy and people were expanding their reaches, which led to the birth of a whole new genre that of the travel industry. Exterior Patinaed and surface rusted steel panels bathed in patina riddled red makes up this stylish rounded 4 door sedan. Some invasive rust with prior repairs showing is rearing its head on a few of the lower panels, but overall the body remains very solid. Plenty of chrome for the curved concave grille with rounded edges. A central curved V originates at the bumper and runs along the hood and then the entire car as a trim spear in chrome. A single headlight is attached to the front of each fender and sports a chrome bezel with a turn signal atop. Smaller running lights are below floating above the large shiny bumper. Rounded exterior mounted fenders frame black steel wheels with chrome trim rings and a moon cap center hub cap with a snappy badge of the Mayflower in the center. These wheels are all wrapped in wide white bias ply tires. A rounded passenger compartment roofline shows the makings of an early torpedo style, and uses an oval rear glass to enhance that effect. Rear fenders melt into the curved down trunk deck with vertical rectangular tail lights and another small signal light just below fills out the tail end of the car perfectly. The trunk latch is a large chromed handle with a center round running light and the shiny large bumper below has a center vertical post all gleaming. Interior A swing of the doors and we see a beige and brown modern version of mohair fabric with original cranks and levers, bakelite knobs and chromed levers and bezels, and this is just the door panels! Slipping inside I can feel the newness of these broadcloth covered seats, with beige inserts and bolsters with some nifty stitching and a few buttons thrown in for good measure. The front bench and rear solid bench are in upholstered tubs, and float in clean brown carpeting. A worn and cracked white bakelite steering fronts a rectangular gold instrument cluster which uses rectangular gauge inserts. Bakelite knobs and pulls are seen in a lineup below the instrumentation. A central brown painted full metal jacket dash front with a Plymouth badge is noted and on the passengers side is a glovebox and just below a heater box. More beige broadcloth is making up the tight and pristine tufted headliner. Drivetrain Under the bulbous hood is a 201.3ci L headed inline 6 cylinder engine. It is fed by a rebuilt 1-barrel carburetor and has the original 3 speed manual transmission on back as well as the 4.10 rear axle. Some patina is showing on the sides of the engine bay, and a surface rusted head is noted, as is new wiring and hoses. Undercarriage Up on the lift we note a solid but surface rusted X frame with surface rusted floor pans. The rockers have some surface rust as well as invasive rust in areas and we note some invasive rust on the rear filler panel as well as the trunk pan itself. The inner fenders just have patina paint and road dirt. Surface rust is noted in independent coil sprung front suspension and rear leaf springs. Also, its got all new drum braking on the 4 corners. Drive-Ability A quick startup and off to the test track where it exhibited smooth acceleration, and easy steering when moving. The brake pedal is a bit soft but the brakes stop the car well. The interior is comfy and ergonomics are good but the radio refused to belt out any tunes An honest car with older patinaed red paint, which is very rare and in this case a collector realized the value of this. While the appearance may suffer a bit, however it is nearly original! A new interior, and mechanically sound engine are what this rounded road ship is all about.
