The 1939 Ford range marked an important turning point in the companys pre-war automotive design, combining streamlined forms with Fords traditional accessibility and mechanical dependability. Its fluid, cohesive new bodywork reflected the growing influence of aerodynamic design while introducing a degree of visual sophistication associated with more expensive automobiles. The influence of the upscale Lincoln-Zephyr was particularly apparent in the teardrop-shaped headlamps neatly integrated into the front fenders. A low, V-shaped grille with fine vertical bars gave the front end a dramatically more modern appearance, while improved airflow permitted the elimination of the previous models side hood vents, further contributing to the clean silhouette.
Offered in Standard and DeLuxe series and a wide variety of body styles, Fords 1939 passenger cars continued to rely on the companys proven flathead V-8 engines. Perhaps more significant was the adoption of four-wheel hydraulic brakes, replacing the mechanical braking system Ford had retained longer than most of its major competitors. The combination of attractive new styling, proven V-8 power, and improved braking made the 1939 models an important step in Fords evolution immediately before World War II.
This Ford DeLuxe Convertible Coupe is one of 10,422 examples produced for 1939, making the handsome open model considerably less common than its closed counterparts. Previously restored under prior ownership, it is finished in grey with a tan fabric convertible top over a brown interior, an appealing combination particularly well suited to the restrained Art Deco styling. Period-style details include bumper overriders, chrome wheel trim rings, hubcaps, and wide whitewall tires.
Inside, a richly finished woodgrain dashboard complements the brown upholstery and contributes to the inviting character of the cabin. With the top lowered to better hear Fords flathead V-8 soundtrack, and the added confidence of the model years newly introduced hydraulic brakes, this attractive DeLuxe Convertible Coupe offers an appealing way to experience one of Fords most recognizable pre-war designs. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/hf26/.
