Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

This 1939 Chevrolet Sedan streetrod is a full uniform custom build that can bring home the trophies. That means not only the interior and exterior are cool coordinating colors, but also the engine bay, trunk, and other details coordinate, too. Add in the best features around like A/C, an upgraded suspension, and a powerful V8, and you soon realize this is the custom build that has a fresh and thoughtful look over every inch. Paint makes or breaks the first impression, and so this one had over $20k invested in the two-tone alone. The PPG Silver Star and Turborod Mica show off why you invest in the best paints and a professional hand to apply them. It has a brilliant radiance that makes the curves of this prewar Chevy steel look like its still wet to the touch. A lot of extra care was taken in getting the gaps right, and everything has a nice freshness, including weather-stripping. Plus, it has the right modern touches, like tinted windows, sport mirrors, and frenched license plate. The classic brightwork is still a standout in places such as the grille and bumpers. But the polish of the large dual exhaust tips and aggressive Billet Specialties Legacy wheels with 15/17-inch front/rear stance draws more attention to the performance attitude. It takes a multi-year restoration to get a build to this level. Its the kind of look where even the door jams are superbly detailed. The full project was finished in 2009, and the low mileage and high quality presentation really makes this look like it just left the shop yesterday. The interior continues this cars award-worthy look. Its a full custom and professional presentation that starts with an intricate pair of bucket seats. These leather chairs are more modern and comfortable than anything from the 1930s, so they are road trip ready. The light grey color flows nicely from the seats to the custom door panels, headliner, carpeting, center console, and even the trunk. The dash, door tops, and steering column are done in burgundy to really keep the two-tone style going inside. The leather and chrome steering wheel is on a tilt steering column, the Lokar shifter is where your right hand wants to be, and the dash is dominated by vintage-style VDO gauges. While this is obviously a drivers car, you have the passenger seat for a reason. So you can keep your company in comfort with the AM/FM/CD stereo, cup holders, modern R134a air conditioning. The engine bay is made to be shown off, too. The inner walls are smooth and painted the exterior silver. And the only brighter shine comes from components, like the polished air grabber, alternator, compressor, and other accessories. At the center is well-built small block power. Its a later model Chevy 350 cubic-inch V8 thats bored .030 over. It has a Crane hydraulic roller cam, an Edelbrock Performer EPS aluminum intake, and topped with a Holley four-barrel carburetor. Youll also spot pieces like an HEI ignition and 16-inch electric cooling fan, and so you can tell this classic was built to also be a true driver. It fires up with a nice aggressive sound as shorty headers add power and rumble to the Flowmasters dual exhaust. The three-speed automatic transmission is built for power driving with a B&M 2400 RPM stall converter. While youre checking out all the details, save some time to look at the undercarriage photos. There youll see the freshness and quality that matches the rest of the build. Also, take note of the upgraded Heidts independent front suspension with tubular A-arms and adjustable coilovers. If this is getting you ready to really drive this classic, then youll also love power steering, power brakes, front discs, and highway-friendly gears in the rear end. Complete with build receipts and restoration photos, this 39 Chevy has been given all the best in thoughtful details. So the only thing missing is you. Call today!!!
