1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe
Clarks Summit, PA 18411-2048
Following in the tradition of previous Ford factory built Mustang race cars like the 1968 Cobra Jet, the Boss 429 and the FR500S Mustang Challenge car, Ford Racing and AAI started work on a production run of 50 Cobra Jet Mustangs in January 2010. Ford Racing built 50 Cobra Jet Mustangs at Ford vendor facilities.
One thing that the crew at Volo Auto Museum understands is that context is everything. They have gone the extra mile to display each movie car with memorabilia and signage that brings the scene to life. The museum features actual movie props such as Tom Cruise's racing seat from Days Of Thunder.

Body: All steel. A Previous owner stripped the body back to bare metal. Body joins and 80 years worth of life on the road and such are visible. Then it was primed and painted with a thin coat of satin black. Car presents nicely as is, but is also at a point where the appearance can be taken in any number of directions. Leave it as is for the Gangsta look, let it rust for the Rat Rod look, or do the prep and paint it the color of your choice. With a finished black vinyl interior, the possibilities are endless. The grille, bumpers, and outside door handles are original. The bumpers and grille were re-chromed. Fatties mirrors were fitted to each door. Windshield wiper transmissions, trunk lid hinges and latch, and hood handles are new reproductions. The License plate was relocated to the center of the trunk lid and incorporates an LED 3rd brake light. Tail lights are LED as well. Headlights are Halogen. All glass was replaced and is lightly tinted except for the front windshield, which is clear laminated safety glass. The foot-well floor panels and trunk floor were replaced. Unused holes in the original firewall were filled.
Chassis: With the body off the frame for stripping, the original chassis was treated to a Mustang II front suspension setup from Chassis Engineering Inc., with Power Rack & Pinion steering. Out back, Chassis Engineering’s total replacement rear leaf spring kit is used to locate the 8” Ford rear axle. Front and rear sway bars from Chassis Engineering are installed as well. The frame was given a nice epoxy paint job. The brakes are front disc / rear drum. My additions included QA1 adjustable shocks on all four corners, and a hydro-boost unit to replace the vacuum power brake booster.
Interior: The interior is finished in black vinyl and has billet aluminum door handles and cranks. The new reclining Corbeau bucket seats are vinyl trimmed but have cloth inserts in the seat and back areas for a comfortable ride. The head rests are adjustable up and down and also possess a fore and aft tilt adjustment. A three-point safety belt set from Juliano’s was installed for the front seats. The polished Ididit tilt steering column controls the installed Rostra Cruise Control, and is topped with a Mahogany Banjo steering wheel from Forever Sharp. The dash retains the original gauge trim bezel, which is almost always discarded. Keeping it helps balance the look with the trim on the glove box door. Behind the gauge trim bezel, sit Dakota Digital VHX gauges. Also on the dash is a Dakota Digital gear shift indicator. Windshield wipers were converted from vacuum to electric. A Classic Instruments clock is mounted in the glove box door. Though present, the cowl vent is non-functional. A Vintage Air A/C system is installed and incorporates a custom made center dash panel. This panel mounts the vertical A/C controls that are flanked by two vents for a one-of-a kind, yet almost factory appearance. In addition to the dash mounted fuel pressure gauge, there are two USB ports. The transmission is shifted via a Lokar floor shifter and the parking brake was retained on the floor as well. A Lokar brake pedal pad and throttle bracket assembly are used. A HalGuard “Clean Agent” fire extinguisher (gas – not powder) is installed within easy reach of the driver as part of NSRA Safety23 safety inspection criteria.
Drivetrain: Chevy 350 engine. Overhauled by a previous owner (have receipts). Accel HEI distributor and Weiand aluminum intake / TH350 trans with shift kit. A FiTech EFI system is used and is tunable via hand-held LCD controller. The fuel tank is a 17 gallon poly unit from Tanks, Inc., and has the fuel pump in the tank. Cooling this setup is a PRC aluminum radiator and a Cooling Components CC-1750 2500 CFM fan/shroud combo. The fan is controlled by a Dakota Digital PAC-2750 programmable two-speed fan controller. Exhaust is 2 ¼ inch mandrel bent tubing. The system was tig welded and features Borla Crate Mufflers, Touring resonators, and tips. The “H” pipe is positioned and shaped so as to allow clearance for a future 200R4 overdrive transmission upgrade. The rear axle is an 8” Ford non-posi unit with 3.00 gears.
