Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

West Coast Classics are proud to present a very rare 1937 Ford Model #78 DeLuxe Phaeton 5 passenger 4 Door 221 CID V8 Convertible. The final year of the Ford Phaeton was the following year, 1938, and this is one of only 3,723 built that penultimate year of 1937 with very few known to be remaining in existence today!Beautiful & very striking older restoration1 of only 3,723 Deluxe Phaetons built in 37Highly sought-after Phaeton model by Ford enthusiastsFinished in factory colors and accompanied with side curtains221 cid V-8 flathead engine, 85 HP, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, rear-wheel drive; wheelbase: 112Ford, more than any other automaker, continued to produce open cars into the thirties, even as sedans and coupes took more and more of the market. During the period, open cars with glass side windows, cabriolets and convertible sedans, gained market share at the expense of roadsters and Phaetons, but Ford kept the fully open cars in production. The last Ford roadster was built in 1937, and, perhaps surprisingly, the Phaeton lasted only one year longer. As befit their nature, open cars were offered only in the DeLuxe model line in 1938.This 1937 DeLuxe Phaeton is one of 3,723 built that year, the rarest of that years body styles apart from the Roadster, and is equipped with the early 21-stud 221 CID V-8 engine with a 3 speed manual transmission backed by a 3.78:1 differential. The car has its original Bright Coach Maroon factory color paint and is rust free throughout with all the body contours correct, door gaps are even, and the doors shut well. The interior had been reupholstered in Brown with matching door panels and carpets and is complemented by the iconic banjo steering wheel and a stem-wind clock in the glove box door. A taupe canvas top nicely completes the motif and the undercarriage is exceedingly clean and rust free. The original wheels are fitted with whitewall tires accented with original spider hubcaps and trim rings. The spare wheel rests in its original trunk location. As previously stated the 37 Deluxe Phaeton is one of the rarest of any Fords built with reportedly only very few left in existence today. This is the last year for no pillars between the doors. Solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptical leaf springs. 4 wheel mechanical drum breaks. The wheelbase measure some 112.In 1937, Ford adopted an all-steel construction for its closed bodies while still offering a variety of open car options. The all-new 1937 models showed evidence of the new streamlined look, which grabbed the publics attention and sold quite well. The headlamps were now tastefully incorporated into the front fenders for the first time, the grille was stretched and sloped backward, and fine horizontal bars decorated the front end and hood sides. The result was some of the best-looking cars of the decade. Out of the some-750,000 Fords built in 1937, just a scant 3,723 were Deluxe Phaetons, making them a rare breed indeed. The Phaeton remains one of the most sought-after early Ford V-8 body styles, and this example retains those beautiful curves and lines thanks to a restoration of both the exterior and interior. Finished in its factory paint color of Bright Coach Maroon with a Tan canvas top, the exterior color flows nicely into the interior where it meets the correct Brown upholstery. Finishing the classy look, it comes with Ford accessory artillery wheels and a set of period-correct wide whitewall tires. Along with the newfound joy the next owner will experience when purchasing this rare Ford, a full set of side curtains, boot cover, and fender skirts are also included. Powered by a 221-cubic-inch 85-horsepower flathead V-8 engine, this beautiful Phaeton is backed by a classic three-speed manual transmission. Always looked after, since its finished restoration, this rare and desirable Phaeton runs smoothly and performs well, making this Ford an ideal car to take out on an afternoon drive. The one of the last of the last, this car truly represents the end of an era and is an exceptional example and a very nice running car for the Ford enthusiast or any pre war period classic car collector.
