Classic Car Overview
1935 Hudson Terraplane Legendary blues artist Robert Johnson recorded Terraplane Blues in 1936. The lyrics relate the woes of a man who left his car in the care of his wife, only to return and discover that it is now suffering a litany of mechanical maladies. Many have attempted to portray this as a metaphor for marital infidelity, but old-car folk know the truth: Its previous-owner syndrome. For consignment a Hudson Terraplane formerly, Essex Terraplane shortened to just Terraplane in 1934. But we are in 1935 for this beautiful early 90s ground up restoration that is holding up very nicely. Slightly hot rodded and wrapped up nicely for the next adventurer to enjoy. Exterior With the suicide 4 door body and hood bathed in very nice Champagne paint and the fenders with running boards sporting a contrasting brown this restoration looks fabulous. Large brown bullet style headlights are nestled next to the swooping down and forward grille in shield style and chrome, dual horns in chrome curved bumper in chrome and a stylized to art deco hawk hood ornament, chrome is in good condition. A small orange pinstripe runs the length at the belt line. The rear trunk very similar to the humpback styling of the Ford has large painted hinges and is flanked by dual small round tail lamps in the end of stick mounts. The bumper below shows some chipping of the chrome on it. On the passengers side a covered spare is nestled into the fender. This was the 1st year for the vinyl inset in the roof and this one is in very good restored condition. 13-inch and 14-inch Keystone Nugget style wheels in champagne are on all 4 corners. Interior Loaded with Camel and Brown suede with it on door panels, and tuck and roll seats with buttons it makes for a wonderfully comfortable and tactile interior. Dual benches are in very nice condition. A simple but effective dash with a cream oval gauge cluster embedded into a walnut fronted dash looks just fab. A/C has been added, and a CB radio hangs below. A new tilt style steering column is topped with a nice brown leather covered wheel. Dark brown carpeting in good condition covers the floors, and terrycloth has been used for the pristine headliner. Up front flanked by the sun visors in brown terrycloth, are dual gauges announcing the water temp and volts. Drivetrain Prepare yourself prior to opening the hood cowlings as you will be met with a more than adequate 305ci V8 (CEJ stamping code) engine, with an Offenhauser intake and 3 two-barrel Rochester carburetors to feed the mill. In back is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. Undercarriage No problems seen here even with any surface rust. The restorer did a fine job of making sure all is well underneath. This car rides on independent coil spring front suspension, and leaf springs in the rear. It stops with power front disc brakes and power rear drums. Drive-Ability Starts right up, and goes smoothly into gear, and pulls down the road with ease, and plenty of power I might add. Has a great sound, and everything functions well. A smooth rider too! Somewhat unusual car restored and modified very tastefully retaining its original design and charm. Nice color combination and paint is holding up well, as is the interior. How many people do you know have a beautiful Terraplane? (and what does that word mean anyway?!)
