Classic Car Overview
Greater Beauty, Greater Comfort, and Greater Safety, declared Ford with the introduction of their beautiful new 1935 model range. Taking a big step forward from the outgoing 1934 Fords, this marked the V8 lines first major refresh since its introduction, signaling Fords arrival into the streamline era with completely new styling and improved refinement. The new Fords were markedly pretty, with a more upright, V-shaped grille, more integrated fenders and a smoother overall appearance.
Not much changed under the new body, and while the chassis componentry remained essentially the same, the front leaf spring was moved forward in order to accommodate the larger and roomier cabin. Ford finally dropped the optional four-cylinder engine held over from the Model A since it offered little advantage over the powerful and refined V8 and very few buyers chose it. Ford sold over 820,000 units in 1935, and production of the V8 engine surpassed the 2-million mark bringing comfort, performance and style to the masses, and handily trouncing chief rival Chevrolet in the sales charts.
Ford offered several appealing body styles in 1935, including the Sedan, Convertible Sedan, Coupe, and of course, the sporty Roadster. This striking Deluxe roadster is an attractive example that preserves the beauty and purity of the original design, while adding just a few dashes of hot rodder sauce to spice up the driving experience. This charming car has been in long-term ownership and is presented with a well-maintained older restoration, finished in black and accented with red wire wheels, wide-whitewall Firestone tires, red pin stripes and a tan top with matching side curtains. Passengers ride on dark taupe leather upholstery on the front seat and matching rumble seat. Theres a period-correct banjo steering wheel, and a rare factory radio which has been updated with modern internals and powers discreet modern speakers.
Power comes from a Motor City Flathead V8, which is equipped for performance with high-flow Offenhauser heads, a polished Offy intake manifold, and twin Stromberg 97 carburetors. There is also an alternator for more reliable charging and starting. Additionally, the driveline features an optional Columbia 2-speed rear end, adding overdrive on the top two gears for more relaxed high-speed cruising. Finally, the brakes have been converted to hydraulic operation for much improved stopping power and dependability.
If there could be a best of both worlds when it comes to classic Fords, this car comes very close to achieving that. It maintains the pure and charming looks of the original roadster, while adding a selection of authentic speed parts to improve all-round performance, making this a car youre likely to find any excuse to head out for a cruise.
