The Chevrolet Master series debuted in 1934 as the automakers most luxurious model, featuring six-cylinder power, streamlined styling, and a wide range of body styles. After abandoning attempts to fight Ford head-on in the lower end of the market, Chevrolet gained traction in the 1930s by offering more refined automobiles at a commensurately higher price point. The strategy was successful, with sales figures eclipsing Fords.
In 1935, the Master DeLuxe was introduced with completely new styling, which featured Fisher Bodys innovative and elegant Turret Top all-steel roof, a split windshield, and suicide doors. Chevrolets Blue Flame inline six-cylinder engine was updated with an improved head design, redesigned combustion chambers, and better lubrication. Output increased over the previous model year to a respectable 90 horsepower.
This restored 1935 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe Coupe was acquired by the consignor in the year 2000 from an individual in Buffalo, New York. A sales advertisement at the time described the Chevrolet to be in good condition with a factory radio and heater. In keeping with the consignors high standards, a cosmetic restoration on the exterior commenced in 2008, with photographs and invoices on file indicating that the body was partially disassembled and brought down to bare metal for refinishing.
The work has stood the test of time, as the Master DeLuxe Coupe presents handsomely, its dapper black body accented with red pinstripes and wire wheels. Notable period features include yellow driving lamps, a radio antenna, whitewall tires, and a rear-mounted, covered spare. Inside, tufted brown upholstery creates an inviting space, while a factory radio in the dashboard completes the period look. The interior shows signs of patina throughout, as does the engine bay and undercarriage.
A sporting and refined pre-war Chevrolet coupe, this attractive example in driver condition bears one of the models most appealing body styles, making it a wonderful tourer and conversation piece at local enthusiast events or, with further attention, an excellent candidate for showing at Antique Automobile Club of America and Classic Car Club of America events. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/hf25/.
