Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

The 1935 Buick 3-Window Coupe was one of the cars that was integral in pulling Buick out of the proverbial financial muck after very poor sales numbers in the early 30s that almost sunk the company for good. But even with cars like this lovely coupe popping up in showrooms more frequently, 1935 Buicks are rather rare machines. Better yet, with this one you get all the modern conveniences and the power of a 350 ZZ4 V8, making it as good a runner as it is a looker. Theres no arguing that the 1935 Buicks were among the best-looking cars of the period and the modifications on this handsome sedan do nothing to diminish those looks. The Forrest Green Metallic paint is a handsome, understated choice, and the rounded art-deco shape has never looked better. In 1935, mono-tone paint jobs were the norm and the modern finish shines beautifully. Obviously, a ton of time went into the build, and they made sure that all the bodywork was ready for primetime, which means the doors fit well, the hood is aligned just right, and all the period details were retained. The roof hasnt been chopped, and even correct parts like the hood emblem, the hood itself, and awesome light fixtures fore and aft are still present, giving the car a dignified look that fits the period. There are a few minor signs of use, but theres no question that this is a fantastic build. Despite the fact that this beauty is a coupe, theres plenty of room inside, where it has been handsomely reupholstered in gray leather. Front buckets from a late-model look great inside this Buick, and despite them being larger units, theres still plenty of room for two large passengers. They skipped any pretense of making it look like a 1935 Buick inside, but thats OK because the handsome trim work shows well and makes it a very comfortable place to be on a road trip. The original dash bezels were scrapped in favor of awesome hydra-dipped pieces that are filled with a full set of aftermarket gauges (digital VDO speedometer; Autometer everything else) on the left, a clock and cruise control dials in the center, and A/C controls and power window switches on the right. Cold A/C blows out of the vents mounted underneath the dash, and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit is integrated into the headliner above. Light carpets add a plush feeling that speaks softly of luxury and the tilt column with a banjo-style 3-spoke steering wheel with Buick center badge is a nice touch. And please take a moment to note that this car includes a spacious, finished trunk thats ideal for touring. Power comes from a 350 ZZ4 V8, which is always the engine of choice when reliability and performance count. Its a tight fit in the Buicks engine bay, which was originally designed for a straight-eight, and with plenty of chrome dress-up bits, it certainly looks good enough to show with the hood open. With a 4-barrel carburetor and HEI ignition, its a very reliable travelling partner and 355 horsepower is over triple what it had originally, so its plenty quick. Dual exhaust sounds muted and muscular, the way youd hope your new Buick would sound, and with a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end, its an easy highway cruiser. Up front, a modern clip adds power steering and power front disc brakes, plus modern suspension geometry, so it drives beautifully, tracks straight, and feels rather modern. 15-inch American Racing wheels help with the killer look and they sit on staggered 215/70/15 front and 255/70/15 rear blackwall Cooper Cobra radials all around. One of Buicks better-looking cars transformed by a big injection of horsepower and performance, this 35 coupe is one way to be sure youre the only guy at the show who has one. Call today!
