Packards evolutionary approach to vehicle design was not without its occasional downsides, yet for 1934, the strategy yielded an exceptionally elegant catalogue that deftly balanced old and new. Long-running details, most noticeably the upright grille, remained and contributed to the classic, formal appearance for which Packard was well known. Meanwhile, graceful, partially covered fenders, signaled an impending shift toward streamlined design.
Beneath the long hood a smooth-running 320-cubic-inch straight-eight engine sent 120 horsepower to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission. Adjustable Ride Control suspension and Bijur automatic lubrication were among the advanced chassis features that helped set Packards apart from others. Production of Packards Eleventh Series began on 21 August 1933, though these were considered 1934 model year cars.
This example is said to have been originally built for a Maharaja and later owned by famed Hollywood actor Telly Savalas. Finished now in a lovely color scheme of cream with black fenders over a black interior, it was converted from right-hand to left-hand drive under previous ownership. The Packard is equipped with a chromed radiator shell a rare option as well as dual side-mounted spares and a rear-mounted trunk. It rides on wide whitewall tires with wire wheels.
Acquired by the consignor in 2020, it has since been maintained and driven sparingly. A Classic Car Club of America Full Classic, this 1101 Eight Touring will be a lovely companion on CARavan tours and at any number of events.
