Classic Car Overview
Built between 1932 and 1934, the Ford Model B has a reputation as one of the most widely beloved antique cars as well as one of the foundations of the hot rod movement in the 1940s and 1950s. As the successor to the Model A, the Model B was the first Ford passenger car to be equipped with the now infamous Flathead V8 and was the end of Fords more "classic" design style, prior to moving to the Model 48 in 1935. Offered in coupe, sedan, roadster, 4-door convertible and pickup, the Model B had a chassis to fit every need and was designed to be competitively priced- making it the first car offered with a V8 that could be owned by most Americans. Design changes for the 1934 model year werent hugely significant over the 1933 model but it has its own historical importance as the car that famed bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde used to seek out for their raids.
Owing to the Model Bs hotrod lineage, this 1934 Ford Roadster may look pretty standard but in fact, has received a host of significant upgrades that make it a real performer. Finished in two-tone red with black fenders and running boards, this Roadster looks exceptionally period-correct- especially when paired with its tan convertible top and cream yellow wire wheels. The paint and bodywork on this vehicle was carried out to a very high standard with multiple coats of DuPont paint giving the car a remarkable shine in the sun. One of the many unique features found in this car that is only from cars of this era is a rear rumble seat. Sitting outside of the convertible top, this popout seat gives space for two more passengers right over the rear axle which is huge fun to ride in- while also adding a bit of practicality.
On the inside, the car is finished in chocolate brown vinyl on the seats and doors, which is paired with a robust, tight weave brown interior carpet. The front bench seat has been fitted with seat belts for added safety. One of the key things that differentiates a 1934 Ford over the earlier models is a dashboard painted to match the exterior of the car- the red dash in this Roadster looks great and is fitted with updated gauges to keep track of everything going on under the hood with more accuracy.
Speaking of whats going on under the hood, that is where this car gets particularly interesting- a 1950 Mercury Flathead V8 has been installed in place of the original engine offering a significant bump in power. That is paired with a set of Offenhauser high performance heads and a Holley 4 barrel carburetor as opposed to the single barrel Stromberg carburetor that would have come standard. A Fenton powder coated exhaust system gives this car that classic Flathead noise that everyone loves and a 12 Volt conversion adds reliability and means that things like the headlights actually work well! The installation of a hidden ignition cutoff switch makes this car easy to store without worrying about dead batteries and new brakes mean that it has plenty of stopping power to go with that bigger engine. A 1939 Ford 3-speed manual gearbox has been paired to the Flathead V8 which offers smooth shifting and an easy to modulate clutch around town.
These Fords are a tremendous value in the world of collector cars and offer unbelievable amounts of fun per dollar. This example with its recent refurbishing and hot rodded engine, makes for an even better driving experience and a car that looks great too. With summer approaching, this is a perfect car to pile the family in, drop the top and cruise around in and will be a joy to use every time you take it out.
