Following in the tradition of previous Ford factory built Mustang race cars like the 1968 Cobra Jet, the Boss 429 and the FR500S Mustang Challenge car, Ford Racing and AAI started work on a production run of 50 Cobra Jet Mustangs in January 2010. Ford Racing built 50 Cobra Jet Mustangs at Ford vendor facilities.
One thing that the crew at Volo Auto Museum understands is that context is everything. They have gone the extra mile to display each movie car with memorabilia and signage that brings the scene to life. The museum features actual movie props such as Tom Cruise's racing seat from Days Of Thunder.

The article is shown in the photos and details some of the amazing craftsmanship and details of the build. Too many one off parts and custom touches to list here. It is best seen in person to appreciate.
Downs Manufacturing fiberglass body with steel fenders and running boards. Easily removable Carson top and rear side windows. There are color matched covers for the rear portion of the body when the top is removed. The windshield is chopped 3". As well as having the wheelbase, front fenders and hood extended 3".
Laser straight bodywork, gaps and panel fitment with glass slick paint. Finished and detailed as nicely underneath as it is on the top side. Car shows incredibly well with just a few very minor stone chips in the lower front fenders from being used as it was built for. To be driven and enjoyed.
As listed in the magazine article. The drivetrain consist of a 1988 Corvette TPI fuel injected engine and 700R4 overdrive transmission. Featuring hand fabricated billet aluminum valve covers and pulleys as well as various other one off billet accent pieces. Motor and transmission start right up and run great as you would expect. Ready to drive anywhere you like.
The hand fabricated chassis features a 9" Ford rear center section in a one off fabricated housing. Located with a hand fabricated polished stainless steel 4-link rear suspension with Carrera coil overs. The independent front suspension is all hand fabricated as well. Using polished stainless steel tubing and Carrera coilovers. Power disc brakes all around. Power steering from a Saginaw box.
The engine block, steering box, calipers and all other steering/suspension components that are not polished stainless, have all been ground smooth before receiving body color matching paint.
Kerker headers and polished stainless steel mufflers from Stainless Specialties complete the hand fabricated polished stainless steel exhaust system.
The wheels too, as you would expect, have been hand fabricated by Rick Talbot. They started as Champ 500 wheels. The centers were machined out and then replaced with a one off three piece billet aluminum design.
The custom interior is all tan leather. The dashboard is a hand fabricated billet piece using all the original gauges and functions from the 1988 Corvette. Power windows, AC, and a Bose stereo system finish out the interior.
Once again, this car truly needs to be seen in person to appreciate the craftsmanship & phenomenal details both large and subtle.
