1931 Dodge Series DH

Offered for sale with No Reserve, is one of the rarest early 1930s Dodge Automobiles to be found today, the model DH Phaeton. Of the almost 41,000 Dodge DHs produced, ONLY 164 open touring phaetons were manufactured. This 1931 Dodge DH Phaeton is essentially a single-family owned automobile that has been loved and cherished its entire life. An original car, it underwent a no expense spared high quality restoration by its prior owner before his passing as a tribute to his favorite uncle who tied in WWII. It is quite possibly the finest example of a 1931 DH Phaeton known to exist today. Out of the 164 produced, it is believed that 6 survive today. It is an extremely rare, highly restored Depression Era automobile that has never been offered for public sale.

The DH series was Dodges most popular series in the early 1930s, produced as an affordable yet fine engineered, reliable automobile intended for the average working family. Powered by its original 211ci/68hp 6-cylinder engine and 3-speed transmission, this Phaeton is an original restored vehicle. The exterior is of a deep glossy black with tasteful red pinstripe. The interior and top upholstery were done to an extremely high standard, and the full complement of gauges show and function as it was 1931. Overall, this is a beautiful automobile with fond family memories.

In the summer of 1931, a young student was hired by a wealthy family on Maines Mount Desert Island to tutor and caretake for their children during the summer months. According to family history, this Dodge Dh Phaeton was purchased for the tutor to use and take children on outings. At the end of the summer, the vehicle was gifted as a token of appreciation as the young man returned to Harvard for the fall semester and throughout his college and young adult years drove his beloved Phaeton.

Prior to the US entry into WWII, this young Harvard graduate placed the Phaeton in storage and volunteered for the British Royal Air Force (RAF), becoming a Lancaster bomber pilot. Tragically he was shot down on his 30th mission, the last mission needed before completing his tour of duty. Following WWII the vehicle was taken out of storage and driven into the 1950s by the former Harvard graduates son. On a Thanksgiving Day, the Dodge affectionally referred to as Uncle Andys Car was given to a beloved nephew. Though high school and beyond, to proms and adventures this Dodge was driven always with Uncle Andy in mind. After many years in storage, the young nephew, now of ill health and age was determined to restore the car to its original glory before he passed as a tribute to his fallen uncle.

After several failed restoration attempts, this rare original 1931 Dodge DH Phaeton was sent Doug Latham of English Auto in Searsport, Maine. Known for their meticulous work, every aspect of this Phaeton was completely disassembled, rebuilt, repaired, and restored. Rare, needed original parts were acquired though diligant searched or remanufactured when needed. Copies of restoration records are available with the vehicle. Opportunities to own such a beloved and extremely rare example of automotive history are hard to come by, making this DH Phaeton worthy of any serious pre-war or MOPAR collector.
