Two variations were available Series R, with a wheelbase of 122 inches and Series L with a commanding 139-inch wheelbase length suited to several of the most handsome and opulent body styles emblematic of the Jazz Age. Both were powered by Hudsons famous inline six, a 288.5-cid, F-head unit with overhead intake valves developing 92 rated brake horsepower. The secret to the Super Sixs success was the uncanny smoothness of this engines power delivery, with the crankshaft carefully balanced by a patented series of precision-engineered counterweights. When combined with lighter-weight bodywork, the Hudson Model L was one of the fastest cars available at the time.Basic styling for the 1929 Hudson line was updated with a taller radiator, cowl, and hood line. Mechanical improvements were numerous, including hydraulic double-action shock absorbers and self-energizing brakes, plus electric fuel and oil gauges, windshield wipers, a rear-view mirror, and electrolock theft deterrent, plus wire-spoked wheels. Hudson made a total of 71,179 cars for calendar year 1929 Hudsons all-time best, propelling the company to a stellar third-place sales ranking. The costliest car in the Hudson model catalogue for 1929 was the Sport Phaeton, priced from $2,200. Exuding a virile presence, its handsome and adventurous semi-custom coachwork was crafted by Biddle and Smart with design profoundly influenced by Hudsons collaboration with the Murphy coachbuilding company of Pasadena, California, where eventual Hudson design head Frank Spring was employed. Featuring a dual-cowl, dual windshield seating arrangement with uncommon flair suggestive of cockpits of the eras fastest speedboats and aircraft, this rare body style remains one of the finest of all applied to the mighty Hudson Model L chassis. This example was formerly part of the famous Eldon Hostetler Hudson collection until August 2018 and according to research by Hostetler Hudson Museum staff, it is one of as few as 17 produced and just seven remaining today. The Hostetlers purchased it during late-October 1992 via Jack Miller, the renowned marque expert and the last active Hudson dealer, who was holding the car in safekeeping for the prior owners. The Hostetlers kept the Sport Phaeton for a number of years before commissioning Pat and Jan Appenzeller of Milford, Indiana to restore it, with the work completed in 2002 to outstanding effect. Following acquisition from the Hostetler Hudson Collection in 2018, this Model L went on to earn the Senior National First Prize in 2019 and Grand National honors in 2020 both at CCCA judged events. As offered, the Hudson is visually stunning and captivating throughout, with the unforgettable Yellow/Orange color combination personally selected by Mr. and Mrs. Hostetler after seeing it featured in a period Hudson advertisement. A true study in Classic Era sporting elegance, this Sport Phaeton is accented by excellent brightwork and upholstery and very well equipped with period accessories including Pilot-Ray pivoting driving lights, a radiator grille stone guard, a beautiful winged radiator mascot, stanchion-mounted spot light to the drivers side, dual side mounted spares with canvas covers and side view mirrors, cowl lamps, a Tan canvas folding top and side curtains, and of course, dual folding windscreens and a flip-up rear cowl. Extras include a full set of side curtains, twin folding tray tables in the rear passenger compartment and a jewelers quality instrument panel featuring a beautiful cast-in accent pattern.Rightly recognized by the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) as a Full Classic automobile by virtue of its Model L chassis alone, this striking 1929 Hudson Series L Sport Phaeton is quite likely one of the finest examples of these rare Classic Era masterpieces remaining in existence and available today.
