Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Arizona event, 23 January 2026.
Offered Without Reserve $50,000 - $75,000 USD

  • One of the great American performance cars of its era
  • Unusual right-hand-drive configuration
  • Attractive older restoration; ideal to freshen for touring
  • Proceeds of the sale to benefit the San Marino Motor Classic, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting the Pasadena Humane Society and Cancer Support Community

Originally introduced in 1927, the Black Hawk Speedster was the modern successor to the legendary Stutz Bearcat of the Brass Era, as well as the very first true production boattail speedster by a major American manufacturer. Its powerful inline Vertical Eight engine, fed by dual Zenith carburetors, and a strong chassis with underslung worm drive combined with a taper-tailed body produced first by LeBaron and later in more serious numbers by Robbins and Millspaugh & Irish of Indianapolis. One of the cars captured the Stevens Trophy Cup at Indianapolis, as well as the AAA Stock Car Championship, proving the black hawk as Americas fastest production car of the period.

The 1928 model BB offered here was restored in the image of one of those famed models, by this time carrying Millspaugh & Irish bodywork. Built on an unusual right-hand-drive chassis, originally intended for export, it is finished in a striking combination of rich scarlet with black fenders, with some unusual but attractive detailing including a chrome cowl band and additional chrome flashes alongside the tail in the rear. It is believed that much of the present cosmetic restoration was performed by the well-known Stutz specialist firm Old Iron Works of Montgomery, Texas.

More recently part of the small collection of a grandson of Stutzs legendary president, Fred Moskovics, the black hawk is today offered with the sellers proceeds benefiting the San Marino Motor Classic, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which supports the Pasadena Humane Society and Cancer Support Community.

This is an extremely beautiful representation of one of the most famous Stutzes, nicely detailed and ideal for any collection of Full Classics.
