Classic Cars: Know Where to Look for Rust Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying a classic car, you should know where to look for rust and how extensive the repair might be.

Classic Car Overview

1926 Ford Model T Fordor Sedan For consignment a 1926 Ford Model T Fordor sedan. This tall brass era chunk of history is configured to take at least 5 passengers comfortably to their destination. It is in barn find condition, comes in a wonderful patined black finish and is a piece of automotive history. While you may have heard that you could have a Model T in any color so long as it was black, nothing could be further from the truth. Red and gray were used prior to June 1909, green was used from prior to June 1909 through 1910 and blue was used from 1911 until very early 1913. Starting in 1913 and continuing until 1926 black was the only color option, then come 1926 a whole host of new colors became available. Talk about history getting muddled throughout the ages. This particular T, while not showing in on the outside, has been treated to a host of maintenance and repairs, the least of which being a rebuilt transmission, rebuilt carburetor, and a refreshed engine so you can reliably motor your way out of our Hallowed Halls and onto your next adventure. Exterior As a not often seen Fordor sedan we see a bit of a higher stance. Also, as was mentioned earlier, a new color palette was available for the 1926 model year, and this car is in all black albeit weathered and worn. A real change from what is normally seen on a Model T, a closed cockpit is seen with a visored and new vinyl covered roof, as metal working technology was not able to create such a large piece of flat steel at the time. This is a 4-door version with clear glass encompassing the cabin to let your passengers breathe in the sights, all the while being sheltered from the weather. The body is invasive rust free and has a satin finish of patinaed black paint, surface rust and age throughout, but it all adds to the overall charm. Simple black curvy fenders frame wood 21-inch spoked wheels with a natural grain finish all wrapped by 4.40.4.75 blackwall rubber from the 37th week of 2018. The running boards are solid and on the front, heavily tarnished chrome bezels hold the tie-bar equipped head lighting in front of the tarnished silver radiator corral. Out back, a single tail light hovers atop the drivers rear fender and a spare tire rests just behind the wrap-around rear of the body tub. Interior A swing of the door allows us to climb aboard and reveals a multi-colored blanket covered front seat. Underneath is what may be the original tan upholstery that shows with minimal tearing and age wear. A matching bench stretches across the back of the car, meeting up with the soiled and stained brown broadcloth inner rear panels The black steel dash, in very steampunk styling, has oversized round black faced instruments with a tarnished chrome bezel and single knobs and dials as well as the steering wheel which is big and original rising towards the driver. Wood planks are making up the floor and remain in good solid condition. Caressing the sides of the front bench are broadcloth tan striped door panels with shiny chrome cranks. These panels show with some waviness but remain intact. The Model T pedal setup is there for you to figure out! Drivetrain Under the hood is a 177ci inline 4-cylinder engine which has been refreshed and carries a 14112461 stamping number, indicating this engine was assembled in August of 1926 and is original to this car. A fine covering of surface rust and plenty of patina can be seen throughout the bay. A new radiator is on to keep things cool and a rebuilt 1-barrel carburetor feeds this small mill. Rebuilt coils light the fires within and on the back is a rebuilt 2-speed planetary transmission with a rebuilt flywheel that sends power to the fully rebuilt 3.63 geared rear axle. Undercarriage Showing some areas of surface rust, black paint and wood flooring, the undercarriage remains solid and structurally sound. Road dirt and slight surface rust are noted on the underside of the running boards and inside of fenders and we note a new battery has been installed. Seen for the suspension are transverse leaf springs and mechanical drum brakes for the rear only. Drive-Ability All fully working, starts right up actually with the turn of a key and push of the floor mounted starter button, this truck runs beautifully. Great tight steering and a real attention getter, it rode just fine, albeit a bit primitively, but hey its A Model T not a Caddy! A wonderfully patined yet structurally sound example with a rebuilt drivetrain and some other work to make this a reliable and fun driver. Are you ready to own a piece of early automotive history and see just how indestructible these cars were built in these simpler times.
